What makes a good promo?

After this weeks RAW/iMpact gossip and opinions, I have to ask everyone - what makes a good promo for you?

Me personally, I LOVED the HBK/Taker promo that opened RAW. A LOT of people don't seem to feel the same way about it. It was two guys, two of the top stars in WWE, doing nothing more than exchanging words. It didn't end in a brawl, there was no childish antics, no name calling etc. Two guys trying to convince the other, the WWE Universe and themselves that they'll win at Mania. They did it perfectly, and apart from Taker's minor mishap, it was PERFECT!

But I gotta ask, what makes for a good promo? does it change on who's involved? the storyline? The content? The 'mic work'?



Me? I love a promo that makes sense. One that has what it's supposed to. Like the HBK/Taker promo, it didn't have an excessive fight at the end - because that wasn't what they would've done. They're past brawling to prove a point, it's not a personal rivalry like that. They did what they were supposed to. And the content? Fucking epic!

On the other hand we had the Angle/Anderson promo! I LOVED this promo as well, I think possibly my fave promo for iMpact. The whole soldiers surrounding the ring thing was pretty cool, and Anderson getting cut off by Angle - who blingsighted him, was nice. This had a brawl, but with the whole 'US Army' angle it was needed. Another good promo, not as good as HBK/Taker, but still good.

I agree with ya for the most part. I'm so tired of run ins and brawls. What makes a good promo for me is when there's something to be interested in being discussed.

Also, when a wrestler steps outside of himself and has intensity. Whether that's a controlled, more discreet intensity (like: Undertaker) or that's an insane crazy intensity (like the Macho Man or Ultimate Warrior).

A good promo should never have one wrestler repeating the same word over and over.

Batista had a really good promo recently on RAW IMO. It actually had me interested the whole time.

CM Punk is doing a great job on Smackdown as well.

Honestly a good promo varies, like Knicky said in the Anderson/Angle promo the brawl was needed. But in some cases it just seems a bit more forced. The Taker/HBK promo was pretty damn good. But what I think made it such a great promo wasn't so much the content of that particular promo but the entire emotional aspect of the Taker/HBK fued going into Mania. IMO what makes a good promo in some cases is how it builds up a particular match/feud.

A good Promo can be many things. For example remember the Backstage interviews with Hulk Hogan and Mean Gene Okerlund, no matter what you think of Hogan you cannot deny that he knew how to build up a match or feud with those interviews and with Mean Gene Okerlund (the greatest backstage interviewer of all time in my opinion) it was perfect chemistry between both of them.

It could be a funny promo like on Raw years ago when Mick Foley did that whole "This is your life" thing with the Rock. I liked it because all these people would come out and supposedly be the Rock's High School Sweethart, Teacher, etc., and the Rock would make fun of them as only the Rock can.

It could be a shoot promo like RVD did at ECW's one night stand on how the wwe writer's kept his language to words like dude or cool, and how he gave Mc Mahon this idea of having the ECW one night stand.

It can be other aspects as well but to me the most important thing about a good promo is as long as it doesn't come out forced and has no excitement and energy, it's usually very entertaining and believable.

I think one of the best promos ever was Paul Heyman shooting on WWE and Vince McMahon for ripping off ECW.
