I honestly believe people should be left to do as they wish, I doubt it will lower activity. I don't think it's a trend thing so people joined in, they just probably saw it and thought it was cool. Just my 2 cents, I'll probably be told to stfu but still there it is.

As Blank said, blame Xanth. I also find it quite annoying but I won't force people to change their names. IIRC I was once called Optimus. I certainly don't make my decision to sign up to a forum based on other people's usernames. I base it on content and activity. But I agree that it is quite annoying when a lot of users change their names at once.
