It's a frequent problem in US (and I can reasonably assume elsewhere) that people only want to defend their preferred leader and don't truly believe in anything when it's inconvenient for their leader. I've right wingers refer to their adversaries, both accurately and not, as useful idiots. They don't realize this can apply to them as well. As cliche as it is, when two people agree on everything one of them isn't thinking. Unfortunately, they are voting.
