March 2, 2010 - Activision has announced Sledgehammer Games, a newly formed studio led by former Visceral Games executives Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, will develop a new Call of Duty title set for release in 2011.

Though details about the new Call of Duty were not revealed during today's announcement, the title will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre."

The company also confirmed Treyarch is handling development on the Call of Duty title to be released this fall. Meanwhile, Infinity Ward is still set to develop and release the first two downloadable map packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

"2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise," stated Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing. "In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."

Activision also says it's looking to expand the franchise with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business. This includes looking at "high-margin digital online content" and taking the series to "new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

Now it's three different COD developers. This might be the rumored MW spin off about Ghost.

I would much prefer for Activision to let Infinity Ward handle the CoD series, and leave it at that.

March 3, 2010 - Activision confirmed to IGN this morning the new Call of Duty title slated for release in 2011 is not the same title that will be developed by the newly formed studio Sledgehammer Games.

Confusion arose yesterday afternoon during the announcement which seemed to imply there were two separate titles in development: a new title by Sledgehammer Games and another title by an unknown developer for 2011.

While little details are known about Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty project, according to the announcement it will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre." Activision also confirmed yesterday that Treyarch is developing the next Call of Duty title set for release later this year.

Update: Activision has issued a correction to their previous comments and apologizes for the confusion. The Sledgehammer Games title is not the same 2011 Call of Duty title previously announced. There are two separate titles. The story has been updated to reflect that.

Fuck Infinity Ward. They were giving the ball with MW2 and they dropped it. Treyarch has been making improvements while Infinity Ward hasn't really. So 3 COD titles confirmed rofl. Call of Duty 7 next year and in 2011 two different games. Most likely the sledgehammer game is a spinoff and the other game is Modern Warfare 3.

Just another big way to make money. The demand for these games are so huge now. Most 3rd Gen gamers "have" to buy these now. Can't blame them for making even more.

Too many games can be overkill. Guitar Hero ain't doing so well now after Activision raped everyone with Guitar Hero games.
