Just to give off the kind of ethereal feeling that this place is not only fucking old but steeped in the protection of saints and followers alike.

It's supposed to be a sort of disembodied call of faith from the dead, who have given their magic or souls to the church so that they may watch over the cathedral in the afterlife. The process would require that they are not just members of the church, but have been important enough to merit to have been ritualistically made one with the Cathedral itself, which is why the voices of the dead can be heard.
