I think my favorite proper early fight in DB is probably Goku vs. Jackie Chun in the tournament finals. Roshi really shows why he's actually the strongest human in the world at that time.

To be fair alot of Action based Anime like to be doing that Hoss. Yeah imagine if Roshi loss to Goku that fight his whole life would be different.

We should blame Roshi to a degree as well because of him fighting Goku as a kid now anytime Goku fights someone he'll do it even if Earth or a Planet in general is about to blow up

I think Goku forgets where he is sometimes. I mean how many times he had a chance to off Frieza and it took Planet Namek about to blow up for him to end Frieza so he can get off the Planet

If he would of finished Frieza earlier which he could he might of made it off Namek with ease. Theirs a negative with that though if he gets off Namek earlier he doesn't learn Instant Transmission.
