Sounds like JR is just sticking up for his 'buddy' without acknowledging the fact that Cole can be pretty Blue at times.
Maybe he's jealous that Striker is moving in on his territory as well.

I've never had a problem with Cole, probably never will. Hell, I've never been so lame as to really go outta my way to hate particular announcers, lol.
Cole and Striker are two very different announcers. I like them both. Striker can be hilarious, at times - like the mentioned CM Punk thing. But I think Cole is pretty damn good too. Though, his 'quiet, seriously worried' tone annoys me, heh.
I loved how Cole covered for Taker being burned by his pyros. Thought that was GREAT!

^I'm actually in the same boat as you. I don't hate the guy and I don't know why so many people do. Sure, he can say some of the dumbest fucking shit but I don't think he's that bad. He has enthusiasm and it's funny to watch/listen to because he sometimes goes so over the top.

Yeah that's what I mean, his heel-ness was too forced. It was like he was The Pro's guy and Josh was the rookie's guy.
Speaking of Josh Mathews, that guy is great on commentary. I'd put him above everyone right now besides Striker (who's starting to get annouying).

I was telling nou that Cole should perm stay on NXT and play the mega WWE mark/fanboy. That shit was lol. Get like Striker or Saxton to harass him while he downplays all the indies shit, like King use to do.

Everyone talking about JR being scared of Striker make me laugh, how can a color commentator take the play by play man's job? If it was King who was scared for his job that would make sense.
I think Striker at times is always trying to pull out the big words a little too much but I can deal with it because his gimmick is an arrogant teacher and man is he refreshing. I like that he knows the proper Japanese names for moves. I admire his passion and knowledge of the business. I love the fact that he was on ECW and when he sees their stars move up to Smackdown or at PPVS he already has great insight and helps the new guys get over. Sometimes Cole and King have no idea who the guys who haven't been on Raw are. Striker seems like a guy that watches everyshow and has insight on every talent and he just does good commentating.
I remember at the Elimination Chamber when Ted Dibiase struck Orton and Cena with the led pipe and Ted was justing standing there not knowing what the hell to do. Striker said Ted Dibiase was at "a cross road in his career" and that was brilliant because that was a really dramatic time in the match and he put it perfectly in my opinion.
I see a lot of the qualities in Striker that JR has and what makes Jim Ross great. I have so much respect for JR and although I do hear a lot of commentator competiton and bickering between Cole King with Striker, I wish he gave Striker a lot more credit.
I would defend Michael Cole when people said he was awful and though I still don't think he is awful his ignorance on Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) on the premiere of NXT was just so sickening to hear. I really believe that Michael Cole like the Ultimate Warrior looks at pro wrestling as a job, nothing eles. They are not true maniac wrestling fanatics. So I forgive Cole, he's there to do the play by play call action, not be a storyteller. C'mon all let's give all cut these commentators a little slack. Jim Ross was the Michael Jordan of pro wrestling announcing. A Micheal Jordan does come along everyday.

Only thing that annoys me is Cole laughing through clearly unfunny promos in the hopes that the viewers might just catch on. Other than that, I can put up with him.
