Hey y'all

If y'all don't mind I could really use some help making up the final roster for by Breakthrough Pro Wrestling project.
A bit of background I am basing it on the Progress promotion, starting in early 2012 when Progress kicked off, so I am looking for suggestions.

I am aiming for talent like Chris Hero if that makes sense? Someone who should have been bigger than they were, imo he should have been ROH World Champion

P.S: I might have a few well known names but I am trying something different

Chris Hero can work and he was someone who actually would down the road wrestle in Progress

I wanted to ask you guys a question. I’ve noticed that all around these kinds of fantasy wrestling projects and games, there has been a MAJOR increase in the use of AI, whether it’s helping write a promo, a match, or even making graphics. I wanted to have an open discussion about it because I’m naturally curious, and as a full time college student, AI is a HUGE topic of discussion in school right now.

I use it myself, but I feed it the information I want it to work with. I’ve found that you still have to tweak things and guide it to make sure everything goes the way you want. I ran a game on another board where someone used AI for basically everything, and the shows got completely whacky. Guys were getting double or even triple booked, feuds would randomly disappear from week to week, and continuity was all over the place.

At the same time though, I’ve experimented with using it for smaller things, like random throwaway tag matches that normally feel like a chore to write. Having AI help with that kind of stuff has honestly made it easier to get shows done and helped me avoid the writer’s block that we all hit sometimes.

Plus, I’m a 36 year old father of two, a full time student, and I work a part time job. The days of sitting behind a keyboard for hours writing endless material are pretty much gone for me. So the idea of using AI as a tool to help get shows out and make the process easier is really interesting to me.

I was just wondering what everyone else’s thoughts were on it. Also this isn't a shot at anyone in particular. As I said I use it, but I have seen some writers get so upset at others. It actually was what killed my project cause a guy who wasn't even apart of the project called out the writer and it made a huge mess where everybody left. I view the use different than others as I am open to it, especially if it's just writing the idea I gave it.

I already know about the affect on the environment, so let's keep this civil and not polictical please.

It's a huge turnoff for me. As soon I see a thread that uses AI Art in any form, I don't read it.This whole thing is wresting fanfiction, if you're willing to feed images into a computer instead of taking half an hour to use Canva, how can I be sure what I'm reading is your own work and not just stolen from something else that was put into the AI before? I don't comment or call people out because it's not worth the headache and people can do what they want, but I avoid anything that gives off AI vibes as soon as I can.

I know AI has basically become the norm in most aspects in life, it’s pretty much just there now the same as google or wikipedia was when those first became big on the internet.

I personally couldn’t figure out how to use it if I tried. When it comes to BTBs I have everything homemade from scratch. A cracked version of photoshop from 2008 and a free trial of MS word that never expired lol

If anyone chooses to use it I don’t mind, I feel like if anything it would enhance some storylines if you asked it questions to help you iron your plans out. But you are missing out on the reward of writing something from scratch.

Ive stated before I have 25-30 minutes free to nyself per night to write and because Im a bad degenerate gambler, Id use that time to lose money, so in a way I write for my sanity. Had I asked AI to write my shows, I would probably be more inclined to gamble with the rest of my time lol

In short, Im not an AI guy and probably never will be, but if it helps you get by then good for you.

I'm not a fan and also wouldn't be interested in reading a BTB that was using AI for most of its writing and the reason BTB's exist is to write your own shows and stuff, so I can't really understand using AI to do so.

I will say, as someone who is just absolutely fucking inept at graphics, I'm not going to criticize someone if they want to use it for graphics. Part of it is because graphics and images are just supplemental aspects of a BTB. I did finally figure out how to use Photopia to make roster images but it took me forever. Luckily there's also some helpful folks around the section willing to make graphics for you if you ask nicely! I have an issue with business and companies, especially huge corporations, who use AI to generate pretty much anything, but they have the money to pay for graphic artists or whatever. I'm just a dude writing a BTB, I'm not ever going to pay anyone anything, mainly because I'm broke as it is... lol.

I would say there is a massive difference between using AI for art, especially if you aren't skilled enough to make art yourself. If you are using it to write results, its a little bit different. Although, I would say. That fanfiction which is what BTB, is often just parodying or pastiche to real things, which some people have commented is stealing. Another point. Once upon time Photoshop and all its free alternatives, was once looked down upon by others, as not being "real art." I think with AI art tools, if it is used in certain ways I don't see it as a major problem. Especially, when there are so many worse things out there. As long as someone is having fun. I think that is all that matters. We have far too many gatekeepers in IRL, we don't need them on this site too.

The question about AI is really a personal choice. I used to post to escape reality and actually shutting my brain off to write my little made-up wrestling stories was really a form therapy for me.

I think writing out your angles and shows gives an author an appreciation for how much a potential reader has to read. As much as writing can feel like a chore, I feel like getting potential readers to read and review your work is the tougher task. Having a bigger word count that a writer really isn't put much effort in can lead to some pretty long ,daunting reading that requires more effort to review than to actually create. That potential imbalance could be something difficult to overcome in a section that features a ton of great projects that are competing for reviews.

Thank you for bringing this up for discussion @SwerveBro.

I will start off by saying I have used and would continue to use AI for my projects. However, I also feel like AI isn’t in an advanced enough state to completely make everything up for you, at least from my experience. There still needs to be someone steering the ship, if that makes sense.

I think the human element is still really important in a BTB. Continuity, storytelling, long-term plans, character direction, and just making things feel consistent all still come down to the person running the project. AI can help with writing things out or getting through writer’s block, but I don’t think it can fully replace the creative vision behind a project.

At the same time, this is a hobby for all of us. Some people have more free time than others, some enjoy writing every single detail themselves, and others use AI to help make the process easier. Personally, it doesn’t really bother me either way. As long as someone is having fun and enjoying their project, I think that’s what matters most.

That being said, there are some pretty freaking good projects in the section - AI use or not.

Interesting convo.

My thoughts and views are similar to Dubb on this one.

Graphics, art and using it to source history, dates etc - i totally get that. Using it to write matches and segments, I personally don't understand that and wouldn't be inclined to read anything that uses AI to do so.

Ultimately while this is just a hobby, and we should all be writing for our own enjoyment first and foremost, there is a reason we post it on a wrestling forum and that's for people to check it out and hopefully enjoy it.

I think using AI heavily in a way cheats the person that's giving their time to read and review your show. Also having the BTBOTM which I can personally say I don't have any interest in, but a lot of other people do, and they might strive to score points etc - and someone who writes everything themselves, potentially finishing lower then someone that uses AI just doesn't sit right with me (don't know if this actually happens but just an example)

Like, imagine we're all posting in a drawing or art thread, and then someone uses an AI image and says what do you think of my drawing? That's how it comes across to me :D lol
