I definitely have no clue if The Beserker’s thing was tossing guys over the ropes and winning via countout, but I definitely enjoy that becoming a thing. It’s something different! I want to picture his constant HUSS shouting like he’s Brody King, but I feel like it’ll instead very quickly become comedy midcard esque shtick.
The Beverley Brothers were inserted perfectly into this match in a way that it didn’t ruin the match, but heavily influenced its ending nevertheless. Really well done with that, as well as the back and forth of the near miss by Marty and full hit by HBK on Marty. I do have to laugh at HBK kicking Marty but being the one most angry because that’s perfectly HBK right there!
I know it’s cheesy WWF era and he’s a face, but there is no way I’m buying Piper glazing Hulk Hogan like that
no way, pal! I’m curious about Flair getting the instant heel reaction before saying anything, purely because I question how many people actually would know who Ric Flair is because of how crazy the divide between WWF/WCW was back then in terms of so many people only watching one and not the other. Not a criticism, just my own ponderings! It’s overall a bit of a tepid start for Naitch, but having Piper fed to him as his first feud is definitely a very smart choice given Piper still being the name that he is.
I personally loved the way you booked the giant fest. It’s soooo cheesy with the ridiculous duffel bag being ridiculously large. I think Sid becoming the MDE’s monster was pretty obvious, but I truly loved that Sid plays the straight man throughout the match and it’s only afterwards that you get the heel move from him. Good sell on Warrior contemplating using the briefcase though! I still think a heel Warrior should happen at some point because the character and man behind it are so completely fucking crazy there’s gold to be had there. Just excellent stuff overall, with the only error to highlight Warrior teleporting from outside of the ring while Sid attacks Taker to then being in the ring for him and Taker to do the simultaneous jump/sit up.
Rick Martel is my favorite kind of heel. You get the character and tropes perfectly, BT. Match very perfectly captured Bulldog being a dominant bad ass, Martel being inferior and needing to take every shortcut possible, and still getting lucky breaks to boot to win. Ending a bit similar to the Tag Titles but still made sure to tweak it by getting the bottle used as well. I’m assuming the Arrogance doesn’t shatter on impact? I would’ve expected that, but for this ending especially it very much needed to not break!!
JFC I cannot take anything seriously after seeing that Steamboat still. Oh man I forgot the massacre Vince wanted to do to this man. Nice quick win to protect Warlord in some fashion, while giving Steamboat a badly needed win.
I definitely did not see the title change happening tonight! Hell, I didn’t even think Flair would go after Hogan tonight after getting things set off with Piper; figured it’d be a slow burn towards the Mania program we never got between the two. Definitely curious to see what happens next now with this title change! Wild to have this not be the true main event given how shocking it is, but I love the idea of this match placement. Not only does it mean you send fans home happy with Savage, but it also is a great way to throw off the scent of the title change – “oh surely Hogan wins since it’s not the main event!” While I know the era, I still don’t like Flair shaking hands with Perfect and essentially offering a soft alliance. Flair shouldn’t be coming in and saying he’s the Real World Champion, and then do that to the new WWF Champion. I fully get Flair more than anything wants to show he’s better than Hogan, but there’s some inconsistencies in the character decisions for me.
Lol I forgot this match was even on the card. Von Erich out there to kill time for the crowd to get ready to cheer again
I also forgot the Natural Disasters still had a match to squash too! So wild that all this happens after the Title match. I fully appreciate the tongue in cheek SHOCKWAVES line about Typhoon/Tugboat/Glitter Storm Trooper
Push them to the moon baybay!!!
Eat your heart out, Goldberg. The shot of Jim Duggan getting driven to the show by the police/US Marshals and getting out of the squad car handcuffed would’ve went HARD in any era. Fantastic little touch, BT. That alone was magnificent. The main event was such a breeze to read because it was just so fun. In pretty much ANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCE, I would say that this match was too modern in its actions during the match, but you wrote this feud so beautifully that literally every single move made sense to me as I was reading it. This is the one match, one feud, where the blood is needed, where the DDT on the guardrail and reciprocal DDT on the exposed concrete is poetic, and where the big insane spot of the Macho Elbow to the stretchered Jake is so bad ass (hilarious too a big spot onto a wrestler being stretchered out after DoN!!). Love him finishing Roberts off with a Macho Elbow from every turnbuckle to really dig in one last time just how much of a blood feud this was.
You're very good at this stuff my friend. Very fun read!
