Announcing This Year's Class

You all nominated, you voted, you wanted it, and so it's only fair that we kick off our induction ceremony.

Our first movie released in the year 1977, and changed pop culture forever. It brought science-fiction to a mainstream audience and broke so many records that it begot a beloved franchise still remembered to this day (though now milked to death by Disney). This movie starred a young Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer, James Earl Jones, and veterans Peter Cushing and Sir Alec Guinness. This made George Lucas a household name, and it allowed us all the have the childhood memories of wanting to be a Jedi. Ladies and gentlemen, our first inductee into the WrestlingSmarks Cinema Hall of Fame:

Our next film needs no introduction. It was the film that turned Quentin Tarantino from a up-and-coming director into a household name. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, the great Ving Rhames, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, and even a cameo appearance by Christopher Walken. This comedic story shown in a sequence of non-linear snippets tells the tale of multiple people's aspirations and mundanity of life clashing together. Jackson especially excels in the film as a fiery and passionate Bible-thumping gangster, alongside his sidekick in Travolta, who's performance in this film arguably revitalized his career after lackluster films throughout the 1980s.

Our next three films are gold-bearers of the heights of cinematic standards:

A fantasy-adventure story told in the style of a bedtime tale by a grandfatherly Peter Falk to his grandchild Fred Savage, this incredible film stars Carl Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, and Robin Wright as our ensemble cast of heroes! It's a film enjoyed by all, with great visuals, gags, and directed by the inestimable late Rob Reiner. Infinitely quotable, and beloved by generations, this film is of course: The Princess Bride!

Delve deep into the life of the criminal underworld, set upon a backdrop of a post-war 1940s New York City; It was the film that redefined an entire genre, and not only revived a career, but launched others. The ensemble cast of Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, and John Cazale. This cinematic masterpiece is not just about criminals, it's about family, and how events beyond their control cause friction and violence in seemingly innocent people. This was indeed the breakout film for Francis Ford Coppola, who would go on to direct many more Academy Award winning films. Welcome to the family... the Corleone Family in: The Godfather.

Our Final Film:

Almost unanimously nominated and voted upon, this film is the story of crime, despair, redemption, and perhaps the greatest of all things: hope. Taking the span of nearly two decades, this film lacks romance, high-stakes action, or any of the trappings of any drama or action film. What it does have is that ageless "it" factor, of a group of incredible actors, great direction, and one of the greatest stories written by Stephen King. With iconic narration by Morgan Freeman, who plays convict Red, who knows how to acquire contraband, but starring Tim Robbins as the reserved and indefatigable Andy Dufresne, a man wrongfully convicted of two murders. With memorable villains like warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton) and captain Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and other excellent parts by actors William Sadler, James Whitmore, and Mark Rolston. Frank Darabond directed this instant classic and undeniably one of the greatest films ever made: The Shawshank Redemption.

It’s wild that Shawshank wasn’t even considered a hit at all but then over time became what it is now.
