Thursday Night Smackdown
April 17th, 2003
Norfolk, Virginia

We get the Smackdown opening video before cutting to a hot crowd in the very popular city of Norfolk, Virginia! There’s no time wasted tonight, as we are starting the night off with some wrestling!

MATCH #1: REY MYSTERIO VS TAJIRI

SmackDown kicks off with some fast-paced cruiserweight action. From the opening bell, both men go at a rapid pace, and it doesn’t slow down for the entire match. Tajiri has Rey trapped in the corner and is unloading on him with kicks. He backs up and runs forwards, looking for an elbow, but Mysterio moves at the last second! Tajiri staggers backwards out of the corner and catches a dropkick right to the back! Tajiri falls forward and it's 619 time! Rey follows it up with a Springboard Hurricarana for the win!

Winner: Rey Mysterio via pinfall @ 6:08

The FBI (Nunzio, Chuck Palumbo, and Johnny Stamboli) are in the ring. Nunzio has a microphone and is clearly feeling himself as the crowd rains down boos. Nunzio starts bragging, saying that for a long time now, the Full Blooded Italians have been running things from the shadows. He says while everyone else has been fighting for attention, they’ve been the ones pulling the strings behind the scenes. But now, that changes. Nunzio says it’s time for the FBI to stop operating in the background and start taking over SmackDown in the spotlight.

He looks around the arena with a smirk and takes a shot at the crowd, saying he wishes they didn’t have to start this new era in a place like Norfolk, Virginia.

“But hey… beggars can’t be choosers, alright?”

That gets heavy heat from the crowd.. And then the APA’s music hits. The arena erupts as Bradshaw and Faarooq make their way out. Bradshaw has a new look, with short blonde hair, and both men look all business as they head to the ring.

They step inside, and Bradshaw grabs a microphone. He says Nunzio can talk bad about Norfolk all he wants, but he loves this place. He talks about the toughness of the city and the kind of people it produces. Bradshaw then turns his attention to the FBI, saying since they’re always talking about being tough guys, that must mean they like to fight.

He tells them if that’s the case, then let’s have one right here, right now! Nunzio immediately backs up behind Palumbo and Stamboli. There’s a brief pause.. Then Palumbo and Stamboli charge.. But APA is ready for it! Bradshaw and Faarooq quickly take control, catching both men and overpowering them almost immediately. Within seconds, they’re thrown out of the ring, sent crashing to the floor. But while APA is distracted, Nunzio sneaks back into the ring and jumps onto Faarooq’s back, trying to lock in a sleeper. Faarooq doesn’t even react. He stands there for a second, almost confused, and looks over at Bradshaw like, “what is this?”

Faarooq reaches back, grabs Nunzio, and throws him off like he’s nothing. Bradshaw starts to fire up, bouncing off the ropes.. With a HUGE Clothesline from Hell! Nunzio gets turned inside out. Palumbo and Stamboli rush back in just long enough to grab Nunzio and drag him out of the ring before anything else can happen. APA stands tall in the ring as the crowd erupts, marking their return in dominant fashion.

MATCH #2: RHYNO VS RIKISHI

Michael Cole notes on commentary that this could be a statement opportunity for both men, with United States Championship qualifiers set to be announced later in the night. This one is physical from the start, with the two big men trading heavy offense throughout the match. Rikishi had just hit a Samoan Drop on Rhyno that got a close two count. The big man whips Rhyno into the corner and works him over with some right hands, before backing up, looking for a big splash!.. But Rhyno moves out of the way at the last second and Rikish crashed hard. Rhyno wastes no time, backing into the opposite corner, before exploding toward Rikishi… GORE!! Rhyno nearly cut Rikishi in half with that Gore! Rhyno covers Rikishi and gets the three count.

Winner: Rhyno via pinfall @ 5:22

A vignette airs introducing a new superstar. The scene opens on a beach, with a Caribbean man sitting calmly in the sand, watching the waves roll in. The setting is peaceful, almost relaxed, until a couple nearby suddenly starts arguing. The tension quickly escalates, and the woman slaps the man before storming off, leaving him standing there stunned. The camera cuts back to the man on the beach. He lets out a small chuckle, clearly entertained by what just happened. He slowly turns his head toward the camera and smirks.

“Now that… that’s cool.”

The man, having overheard, is clearly annoyed and asks Carlito “Hey man what’s your problem?" Carlito gets up with a smile on his face, quickly dusts himself before walking over to the man and knocking him out with a right hand. The man’s woman appears behind Carlito and thanks him, and starts to flirtatiously touch him. Carlito looks up at the camera and smiles. The screen fades out, leaving a subtle but memorable introduction to Carlito.

The Undertaker makes his way to the ring to a massive reaction from the crowd. Once inside, he wastes no time getting to the point. He talks about the past few months, saying he’s had to deal with The Big Show, which led into A-Train, but he handled both of them and proved that this is still his yard. He then shifts his focus, saying now he’s dealing with something that feels all too familiar.. a young guy running his mouth, trying to make a name for himself.

Undertaker says he’s been dealing with that for over a decade, and the only way to handle it is head on. He calls out Sean O’Haire to meet him in the middle of the ring.

There’s a brief pause.. Then the lights go out. They stay out for a few seconds… and when they come back on, Sean O’Haire is standing in the ring, face-to-face with The Undertaker!!

O’Haire lets out a laugh, clearly amused. He tells Undertaker he’s mistaken. This has nothing to do with making a name for himself. He says this is about leading people, about helping them see what they truly are. Then he takes it a step further, saying that in his eyes, there’s nothing special about The Undertaker… except the fact that he’s a fraud.

That gets a reaction. Undertaker is visibily unhappy and takes a step forward, but O’Haire quickly backs off. He says he didn’t come out here for a fight tonight. He just wanted to talk, to try to understand the man they call The Undertaker.

Undertaker cuts him off, warning him to be careful, because he doesn’t think O’Haire understands who he’s dealing with. O’Haire smirks and shakes his head.

"Oh I know exactly who I'm dealing with, Deadman. But the funny part, the irony of this whole situation.. I don't think you know who you're dealing with."

There's a uncomfortable feeling in the arena after Sean says this. His delivery of the line was so eerie that you almost have to believe what he's saying.

“But hey… I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.”

O’Haire lets out another laugh… The lights go out again.

When they come back on, Undertaker is standing alone in the ring. Undertaker looks visibly upset as the show cuts to a commercial break.

Michael Cole notes on commentary that Kevin Nash will be live in the ring later tonight. The camera cuts backstage, where the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar is shown walking with purpose down the hallway, the championship over his shoulder. Before he can get any further, Stephanie McMahon steps into the frame and stops him. She asks Brock where he’s headed, and he makes it clear, he’s going to the ring to confront Kevin Nash.

Stephanie sighs, almost like she was expecting that answer. She tells Brock that unfortunately, she can’t allow that to happen tonight. She explains that the decision is coming from above her, and there’s nothing she can do about it. Brock doesn’t look convinced. Stephanie continues, trying to keep things calm, telling him he can have the rest of the night off… but he needs to leave the arena immediately.

As she says it, security steps into frame behind Brock. That’s when Brock cracks a slight laugh. Stephanie keeps apologizing, clearly trying to defuse the situation, but Brock doesn’t say a word. He just looks at her for a moment, then turns and walks off down the hallway, the security following closely.

***

MATCH #3: MATT HARDY VS FUNAKI

Matt Hardy controls most of the match early, using his size advantage to keep Funaki grounded. Funaki eventually starts to fight back, and the crowd starts to get behind him as well. It looks like the momentum may finally be shifting in his favor.. But before he can capitalize, Shannon Moore slides into the ring and goes right after Funaki. The referee immediately calls for the bell.

Winner: Funaki via disqualification @ 4:18

After the match, Hardy joins in as the two continue the attack, putting the boots to Funaki. Funaki doesn’t stand a chance.. until Billy Kidman’s music hits. Kidman runs down to the ring, forcing Hardy and Moore to back off and retreat up the ramp. Kidman checks on Funaki as Hardy and Moore regroup, clearly satisfied with the damage done.

***

Backstage, Matt Hardy and Shannon Moore are shown walking through the hallway when they’re stopped by Stephanie McMahon. Stephanie asks them if they feel good about what just happened out there. Hardy doesn’t hesitate, saying he’s just trying to elevate the division and install his version of Mattitude into the Cruiserweights. Stephanie clearly isn’t buying it. She tells Hardy that if he wants to represent the division, he’s going to have to prove it the right way. She makes it official.. next week, Hardy will defend the Cruiserweight Championship against Funaki! Hardy doesn’t look thrilled, but before he can respond, Stephanie adds one more condition. Shannon Moore is banned from ringside! That gets a reaction from both men as Stephanie walks off, leaving Hardy visibly frustrated while Moore looks just as annoyed beside him.

***

Kevin Nash makes his way out to a solid reaction from the crowd and takes his time getting to the ring, soaking it all in. Once inside, he grabs a microphone and talks about how good it feels to be back in a wrestling ring. He says the past year hasn’t exactly gone his way. First the biceps injury, then the quad. He admits it’s been frustrating, feeling like every time he got going, something pulled him right back. But now, he says, he’s finally healthy… and ready to remind everyone exactly who he is.

Nash says he thought about going to Raw, maybe settling some old scores. He name-drops guys like Ric Flair and Booker T, even throwing in that Goldberg’s got something coming to him at some point. But in the end, he chose SmackDown. He says the reason is simple. Everybody keeps talking about this guy who’s supposed to be the future of the business. “The Next Big Thing.”

Nash smirks and says he stood face-to-face with Brock Lesnar last week… and he just didn’t see it. He says Brock might be good, but he’ll never be able to carry a company on his back the way Nash did. That line gets a reaction, as the crowd starts to see right through Nash…

And then the arena erupts.

Brock Lesnar is suddenly charging through the crowd, security scrambling behind him trying to catch up. Lesnar jumps the barricade and storms into the ring, laser-focused on Nash. But Nash sees it coming. He quickly rolls out of the ring and backs up the ramp, laughing as Lesnar paces inside, ready to explode.

Security floods the ring, trying to contain Lesnar. Big mistake.. Lesnar snaps.

He grabs one guard and launches him with a suplex. Another charges in and gets planted the same way. Lesnar doesn’t stop. He hoists one of them up and drives him down with an F-5. Another guard tries to step in… F-5 again.

The crowd is going crazy as Lesnar stands alone in the ring, completely unhinged. He looks up the ramp and motions for Nash to come back down and fight. Nash just laughs, backing up toward the stage.

“Maybe next time.”

Nash turns and heads to the back, still smirking, as Lesnar stands in the ring, fuming.

***

MATCH #4: CHRIS BENOIT VS A-TRAIN

This one is hard-hitting from the start, with this match definitely being the most physical battle of the night. About midway through the match, things take a turn as The Big Show makes his way down to the ring. His presence at ringside distracts Benoit for just a second. That opening allows A-Train to take control and swing the momentum back in his favor. The finish comes when A-Train nearly takes Benoit’s head off with a Big Boot, followed up with a sidewalk slam that nearly gets the three count! A-Train grabs Benoit, looking to hit him with a Chokebomb.. But as he lifts him up, Benoit slips out of it. A-Train throws a wild right hand, which Benoit dodges before grabbing his arm.. And locking in the Crossface! A-Train tries to make it to the ropes but Benoit rolls him back into the middle of the ring! A-Train has no choice but to tap out!!

Winner: Chris Benoit via submission @ 8:36

After the match, The Big Show steps into the ring and immediately goes on the attack, unloading with heavy shots on Benoit. Benoit tries to fight back, firing off a few strikes of his own, but after the match he just went through, it doesn’t take long for the size disadvantage to catch up to him. Show quickly overwhelms him. With Benoit worn down, Show grabs him and plants him with a Chokeslam in the center of the ring! Benoit is left laid out as Show stands over him.

***

Backstage, Stephanie McMahon is shown in her office with the United States Championship propped up on her desk. She says that over the past three weeks, she’s been closely evaluating every superstar on the SmackDown roster, and now she’s ready to make her decision. She makes it clear that this championship is going to represent the very best of the brand, so these opportunities are not being handed out lightly.

Stephanie then announces the two qualifying matches set for next week.

In the first match, it will be John Cena vs Rhyno vs Chris Benoit.

In the second match, it will be Edge vs Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio.

She finishes by saying the winners of those two matches will go on to face each other at Judgment Day to crown the United States Champion. The camera lingers on the championship sitting on her desk as the segment comes to an end.

***

Roddy Piper makes his way down to the ring next to a mixed reaction from the crowd, though it leans heavily toward boos after his actions last week. Once in the ring, Piper soaks it in for a moment before grabbing a microphone. He says he can hear the people booing him, but the truth is, they don’t hate him… they hate the fact that he was right. He tells them they’ve spent years cheering for heroes like Hulk Hogan, pretending they’re larger than life, when in reality they’re just men who can be beaten. Piper says last week proved exactly that.

“Your hero isn’t immortal… he’s just like the rest of you.”

That draws even more heat. Piper then shifts gears and introduces his guest for Piper’s Pit, the Chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment, Vince McMahon. Vince makes his way to the ring to a chorus of boos, looking more arrogant than ever. He steps inside and shares an awkward hug with Piper before taking his seat.

Piper starts things off by asking Vince how it felt to pin Hulk Hogan last week. Vince smirks and says he’s been riding that high ever since. He says he doesn’t like to brag, but there aren’t many men walking this earth who can say they’ve pinned Hulk Hogan 1-2-3. He thanks Piper for his “contributions,” and assures him, “don’t worry Roddy… I’ll hold up my end of the bargain.”

There’s a short pause.. Then Hulk Hogan’s music hits. The arena erupts as Hogan walks out onto the stage, clearly hurting and selling the damage from last week. He doesn’t take long to speak.

“Vince, SHUT THE HELL UP! Roddy, you can shut the hell up too!”

Hogan calls them out, asking if it really feels good knowing it took both of them, steel chairs, and bending the rules just to beat him.. and even then, they still couldn’t put him away for good. Vince fires back, saying Hogan can spin it however he wants, but the record books say Vince McMahon pinned Hulk Hogan.

That sets Hogan off. He tells Vince if he’s man enough, if he’s got the guts, then he’ll face him one-on-one again.

“It’s time we end this once and for all. One more match.”

Vince slowly smiles, that sadistic grin creeping across his face.

“Alright Hogan… I’m feeling generous tonight. You want one more match? You got it. I will be the gracious boss that I am and I will grant you a rematch. But it’s gonna be my way. My rules. My stipulations.”

Hogan nods. It's clear he doesn't care about Vince's rules or whatever else he can throw at him. He just wants to get his hands on him.

Vince continues, saying it’s happening at Judgment Day, but it won’t be just any match.

“It’s gonna be an I Quit Match.”

The crowd erupts. Hogan nods, clearly ready for it, and fires back, telling Vince he better say his prayers and eat his vitamins, because Hulkamania is going to run wild all over him at Judgment Day!!

Hogan turns to leave… But Vince stops him.

“Oh, Hulk… I forgot one thing… When you say ‘I Quit’ at Judgment Day… you’re not just quitting the match… you’re quitting your career. If you lose… you’re gone. You have to retire.”

The crowd reacts loudly as Hogan stares a hole through Vince. Vince laughs, clearly loving every second of it.

"I created Hulk Hogan, and dammit, I'm going to be the man that ends Hulk Hogan!"

Huge heat. But Vince isn’t done.

“Oh, and one more thing Hogan…”

Vince says next week, Hogan is going to have a match. And not just any match, a No Disqualification match… against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper!! That gets a reaction. Piper immediately turns toward Vince with a surprised look, clearly caught off guard. He says something to him off-mic, shaking his head slightly. It’s obvious this wasn’t part of the plan. Hogan locks eyes with Piper, the tension building instantly. Vince just stands there in the background, smiling and laughing to himself as the situation unfolds. The show fades out with Hogan and Piper staring each other down, and Vince loving every second of the chaos he’s created.

Monday Night Raw
April 21st, 2003
Kansas City, Missouri

The show kicked off with the music of The Rock hitting the arena, drawing a loud chorus of boos from the Kansas City crowd. Rock soaked in every bit of it, slowly making his way to the ring with his usual swag of arrogance. He grabbed a microphone and wasted no time. “FINALLY… THE ROCK HAS COME BACK… TO KANSAS CITY!” As expected, that line got a strong reaction.. but before Rock could continue, the arena erupted again as Rob Van Dam’s music hit.

Rock looked completely insulted, pacing the ring in disbelief as RVD stepped inside. As RVD went to speak, Rock immediately cut him off. “Who in the BLUE HELL do you think you are?!” Rock went on to explain that he was busy with Hollywood obligations last week and didn’t get a chance to watch Raw, but he heard all about RVD’s challenge. He repeated the question, demanding to know who RVD thinks he is to call out The Rock.

RVD just smirked and fired right back, telling Rock that if Rock has the balls, he’s the man who’s going to beat him in six days at Backlash. That set Rock off. He asked RVD if he’d lost his mind, or if he’d been smoking too many of those “funny cigarettes.” Rock reminded him exactly who he was talking to, a 9-time World Champion, a WrestleMania main eventer, and the man who just retired Stone Cold Steve Austin. Rock told RVD that while facing him might do wonders for RVD’s career, this isn’t some bingo hall, and he doesn’t have time to waste on him.

Rock gave his answer: “No.” He turned to leave the ring, but RVD stopped him. RVD said Rock can take all the shots he wants, but deep down, he knows the truth.. he’s never been in the ring with someone like Rob Van Dam, and he probably doesn’t know if he can keep up.

That stopped Rock in his tracks. He slowly turned back around, lifted the microphone… and instead of speaking.. Rock blasted RVD with a cheap right hand! RVD hit the mat as Rock unloaded with punches. Rock pulled him up and set him up for the Rock Bottom, but RVD fought out with some elbows and exploded with a spinning heel kick that sent Rock flying out of the ring!

RVD popped back up and motioned for Rock to get back in the ring. Rock looked stunned on the outside. He teased getting back in, but thought better of it, backing away and heading up the ramp as the show went to a commercial break.

***

After the commercial break, Jonathan Coachman caught up with The Rock backstage as he was heading toward the exit. Rock looked furious. He grabbed the microphone away from Coach and shoved him out of the frame.

“Rob Van Dam… you wanna try to make a name for yourself? You wanna try to embarrass The Great One? NU UH. That is not gonna happen. Rob Van Dam vs The Rock at Backlash? Six days from now in Worcester? The Rock accepts!”

The crowd inside the arena can be heard cheering loudly from inside the building as Rock continues.

“But Rob… you better be careful what you wish for. Because see, The Rock knows exactly what this is. This is Rob Van Dam trying to use The Rock’s name to make himself relevant. This is Rob Van Dam trying to ride the Brahma Bull’s coattails straight into the spotlight. But at Backlash, The Rock is gonna do what The Rock always does. The Rock is gonna go out there… lay the smackdown on your candy ass… and remind the entire world exactly why I am The Great One.”

Rock tosses the microphone back toward Coachman before storming off as the camera watches him leave the arena.

MATCH #1: LANCE STORM VS BUBBA RAY DUDLEY

Both men's partners were also at ringside for the match. The match was physical from the start. Momentum swung back and forth until Bubba eventually planted Storm with a massive Bubba Bomb in the center of the ring! The crowd came alive as Bubba went for the cover, but as he did, Chief Morley slid into the ring and blindsided him, forcing the referee to call for the bell!

Winner: Bubba Ray Dudley vs Disqualification @ 6:22

D-Von immediately hit the ring, and all four men began brawling. The champions had the early advantage, but the Dudleys quickly fought back and turned the tide. Out of nowhere.. 3D! Bubba and D-Von planted Storm in the middle of the ring! Storm rolled out to the floor, leaving Morley alone. Bubba turned, fired up, and shouted at D-Von to “GET THE TABLES!”

The crowd exploded as D-Von rushed to the outside and slid a table into the ring, setting it up dead center. The Dudley Boyz stalked Morley, waiting for him to get back to his feet. But just as they went to strike, Storm reached in from the outside and yanked Morley to safety, dragging him out of the ring to a loud chorus of boos. The champions retreated up the ramp, clutching their titles, narrowly escaping disaster.

Back in the ring, Bubba grabbed a microphone, breathing heavy but fired up. He shouted up the ramp, saying if the champions want to add stipulations to protect themselves, then the Dudley Boyz have one of their own.

“At Backlash… we’re not just taking those titles… we’re putting your asses THROUGH A TABLE! If you two are man enough!? How about at Backlash.. for the World Tag Team Championships.. A TABLES MATCH!"

The crowd erupted as the Dudleys stood tall beside the table, the challenge officially laid out.

***

Backstage, the camera cut to the locker room of Evolution, where all four members stood together. Triple H paced back and forth, clearly frustrated. He vented about the situation he’s in. Having to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Goldberg, while still dealing with what he called the “Booker T nonsense.” Triple H turned his attention to the rest of Evolution, making it clear he wasn’t happy that they hadn’t taken care of Booker T like he asked the previous week.

Ric Flair stepped in, trying to calm things down. Flair told him not to worry about Booker T, brushing it off like it wasn’t a real problem. Triple H snapped back, saying that’s easy for him to say, but not so easy to deal with. Flair didn’t back down. Instead, he shifted gears, stepping into full “Nature Boy” mode. He reminded Triple H exactly who he is.. The Game, The Cerebral Assassin, the measuring stick of the entire WWE. Flair dismissed Goldberg as nothing more than a relic of the past, a man desperately trying to relive his glory days.

The words definitely seemed to help. You could see the change in Triple H’s demeanor. The frustration started to fade, replaced by confidence and intensity. He nodded slowly, buying back into his own dominance. Triple H then turned to the rest of Evolution, telling them it’s time to get back to what they do best, running Monday Night Raw. He looked directly at Randy Orton. He said it starts tonight. In his match with Jeff Hardy, Triple H told Orton to go out there and make an example. Orton smiles and tells Triple H not to worry, he will handle Jeff Hardy. Evolution stood united as the segment ended, the group looking refocused and dangerous once again.

***

MATCH #2: CHRIS JERICHO VS GOLDUST

This match was all about Jericho sending a message heading into Backlash. Goldust did manage to get some offense in early. But it didn’t take long for Jericho to take control. Jericho’s aggression became more and more as the match went on. This wasn’t just about winning, it was about proving a point. After cutting off a brief comeback attempt, Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho in the center of the ring. Goldust had nowhere to go and was forced to tap out.

Winner: Chris Jericho via submission @ 4:32

Jericho held the submission in for an extra moment even after the bell rang, refusing to release the hold right away. When he finally let go, he rose to his feet with a cold, focused expression. It's clear Jericho is fixated on one thing and one thing only.. proving that his WrestleMania loss to Shawn Michaels was a fluke.

***

The music of Booker T hit as he made his way to the ring, the Kansas City crowd firmly behind him. He admitted that ever since WrestleMania, something has been eating at him. He said he’s been consumed, almost obsessed, with getting payback on every single member of Evolution after what happened in that World Heavyweight Championship match. Booker made it clear he still believes he was robbed on the biggest stage of them all.

Before he could continue, the music of William Regal cut him off. Regal walked to the ring and wasted no time getting face-to-face with Booker. He told Booker that he’s making a serious mistake, spending all his time worrying about Triple H, while overlooking the man standing right in front of him. Regal told him to accept reality. Just like he lost at WrestleMania… he’s going to lose again at Backlash.

Booker shook his head and told Regal he’s not overlooking him. Not even a little bit. Booker said he knows exactly what Regal is capable of… but he’s not sure Regal understands what he’s capable of. Booker stepped closer. “So let me remind you"… BOOM! Booker fired off a right hand that dropped Regal to the mat!

The crowd erupted as Regal immediately scrambled, rolling out of the ring and retreating up the ramp. Regal clutched his jaw, eyes locked on Booker with a mix of anger and caution as he backed away. In the ring, Booker stood tall, fired up, making it clear that he’s ready for both the Intercontinental Championship, and anything Evolution throws at him.

***

MATCH #3: SCOTT STEINER VS MAVEN

What started as a potential squash turned into a more competitive match than expected. Throughout the match, Maven was able to use his quickness advantage to swing things into his favor, even managing a pinfall attempt that nearly caught Steiner off guard. But it didn’t take long for Steiner to turn the tide.

When he eventually got his hands on Maven, it was all over. Steiner launched him across the ring with a series of belly-to-belly suplexes. Steiner eventually locked in the Steiner Recliner in the center of the ring. Maven had nowhere to go and was forced to tap out.

Winner: Scott Steiner via Submission @ 5:12

After the match, Scott Steiner didn’t waste any time grabbing a microphone, still breathing heavily as he paced around the ring. Steiner demanded that Test get out there right now so he could “kick his ass.” There was a brief pause… Then Test’s music hit.

Test slowly stepped out onto the stage with a cocky smirk across his face, taking his time as he stared down at Steiner from the entranceway. Test never made a move toward the ring, instead choosing to stay right where he was as he raised a microphone.

“Scott… I don’t like you. I’ve never liked you. And trust me, I’m not the only one. You wouldn’t believe how many of the boys in the back have been coming up to me these last few weeks. Every single time I kick your ass, it’s like I get even more popular than I already am!”

Test smirked to himself, clearly entertaining himself, before continuing.

“And you know why that is? It’s because you walk around here acting like you’re some kinda big bad ass… but you’re not.”

That instantly set Steiner off.

“I’M NOT SOME KINDA BIG BAD ASS… I AM THE BIG BAD ASS!”

The crowd erupted as Steiner paced around the ring in fury, screaming for Test to get down to the ring so they could settle things immediately. Test just laughed.

“I’ve never backed down from a fight in my life, Scott. So you want a fight? You got it. But it’s gonna be on my terms... And if you think I’m fighting you tonight, you’re outta your mind.”

The crowd booed loudly.

“I’m done being overlooked. I’m done being left off show after show while everybody else gets opportunities handed to them. So now? I’m taking things into my own hands. So you want a match with me, Scott? Fine. You got it. This Sunday… at Backlash.”

Test lowered the microphone with a smug grin on his face as Steiner looked furious inside the ring, the match officially for Backlash.

JR stood at the commentary table with a microphone in hand as the camera cut to the TitanTron, where Shawn Michaels appeared seated for a sit-down interview. The arena quieted as JR asked Shawn how he’s been feeling now that he’s a few months into his return to WWE. Shawn took a moment before answering, saying he honestly feels better than he ever has. Mentally, physically, and spiritually. He said being back in the ring full-time still feels like a dream, but he’s also noticed something different compared to his first run in the 90s.

Shawn said there’s a level of disrespect in this business now that he’s never seen before. He mentioned the way Triple H has treated him over the past few months, but said even that doesn’t compare to the disrespect shown by Chris Jericho. Shawn called Jericho delusional. He said that on the grandest stage of them all, after going to war for over twenty minutes, Jericho chose to end it with a low blow.. and that was disgusting. Attacking him from behind with a chair? Disgusting.

Shawn said the truth is… he broke Chris Jericho at WrestleMania. And at Backlash, he’s going to break him for good. He said when it’s all said and done, he’ll beat Jericho again and remind the world exactly why he’s called “The Showstopper.”

JR began to ask another question, but suddenly, there was commotion on Shawn’s end. A voice cut through the noise... “You love to talk, don’t you?!”

Chris Jericho stormed into the shot and immediately Shawn leapt up to his feet and the two erupted into an all-out brawl, fists flying everywhere as the camera struggled to keep up!! The arena was buzzing as all the chaos unfolded on the screen. It looked like Shawn was starting to gain the upper hand.. But from out of nowhere...

LOW BLOW!

Christian
slid into the frame and delivered a brutal low blow to Shawn, dropping him instantly! Jericho didn’t hesitate. He jumped right back on Michaels, stomping him down before grabbing the legs and locking in the Walls of Jericho in the middle of the room! Shawn writhed in pain as officials and referees rushed in, desperately trying to pull Jericho off. Jericho cranked back even harder, screaming at the top of his lungs: “I’M BETTER THAN YOU, SHAWN!” I’M GONNA BEAT YOU AT BACKLASH!”

It took multiple officials to finally pry Jericho off as he continued shouting, completely unhinged. Christian stood nearby, smirking as the damage had already been done. The camera lingered on Shawn Michaels, clutching his lower back in pain. Jericho’s message was loud and clear heading into Backlash.

MATCH #4: WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP #1 CONTENDERS MATCH: VICTORIA VS LITA
Commentary immediately put over how unhinged Victoria has become in recent weeks, highlighting her increasingly aggressive behavior, especially the attack on Trish Stratus that sent a clear message to the Women’s Champion. The match itself was competitive from the start, with both women getting in plenty of offense. Match control shifted multiple times, and both women had a few near falls.

The finish came when Lita climbed to the top rope, possibly looking to connect with a hurricanrana. But at the last second, Victoria moved out of the way, sending Lita crashing hard to the mat. Victoria didn’t hesitate one bit. She quickly pulled Lita back to her feet, hooked both arms, and drove her down with the Widow’s Peak in the center of the ring, hooking the leg for the three-count.

Winner: Victoria via pinfall @ 7:32

Victoria didn’t celebrate in a traditional sense. She just stood over Lita with an unsettling look, clearly focused on one thing: the Women’s Championship. The camera showed the champ, Trish Stratus watching on a monitor backstage. She looked calm, looking just like a champion should, as she watched her new challenger for her championship.

***

The camera cuts to the announce team of Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler. Jim Ross says he has two major announcements concerning Backlash that he just received from Eric Bischoff. First, Christian vs The Hurricane had been made official for the event. Second, the World Tag Team Championship Match will now be a Tables Match!

MATCH #5: RANDY ORTON vs JEFF HARDY

The match was fast-paced from the start, with both men getting in plenty of offense. Jeff definitely had his moments during the match, but the young Orton stayed composed and never let it get too far away from him. Orton targeted Jeff’s back to wear him down. Jeff was even able to hit the twist of fate, but Orton was able to kick out at 2! Orton showed why he’s considered the future of the business. As Jeff climbed to the top rope, looking for a Swanton, Orton jumped up to his feet and hit the ropes, causing Jeff to fall in an awkward position. Orton then grabbed Jeff, got him in position…

RKO! FROM THE TOP ROPE!

Jeff crashed to the mat as Orton immediately hooked the leg.

1… 2… 3.

Winner: Randy Orton via Pinfall @ 12:22

After the match, it looked like Randy Orton remembered exactly what Triple H told him earlier in the night.. make a statement. Orton grabbed a lifeless Jeff Hardy and dragged him back up to his feet… ANOTHER RKO! The crowd groaned as Orton planted Jeff for a second time. Not satisfied, Orton kicked Hardy out of the ring and began to pose, soaking in the boos.. But suddenly..

GOLDBERG’S MUSIC HIT!

The arena exploded. Goldberg stormed out onto the stage to a huge reaction, laser focused as he marched straight toward the ring. Orton stood his ground for a brief moment, clearly trying to hold his composure… But as soon as Goldberg stepped onto the apron, Orton bailed. He quickly slid out of the ring and retreated through the crowd, not willing to take the risk. Goldberg stepped into the ring, eyes locked on Orton as he escaped, the tension building ahead of the contract signing. The show cut to commercial as JR let everyone know that the contract signing for the World Heavyweight Championship match at Backlash was next.

***

During the commercial break, a table and two office chairs were set up in the ring. When the show returned, Goldberg was already seated, focused and waiting. The music of Eric Bischoff hit next, drawing heavy boos as he made his way to the ring. As Bischoff stepped inside, Goldberg immediately stood up, causing Bischoff to visibly tense up. Eric could be heard reminding Goldberg that he was the General Manager and that he was not to be touched under any circumstances.

Moments later, the arena filled with boos as Triple H made his entrance, dressed in a sharp suit with the World Heavyweight Championship draped over his shoulder. He entered the ring and took his seat across from Goldberg. Bischoff tried to keep things professional, stating that there would be no physical altercations tonight. This was simply a legal contract signing to make the Backlash main event official. He asked Goldberg, as the challenger, to sign first.

Goldberg picked up the contract, glanced at it briefly… then grabbed a microphone. He said it felt strange seeing Triple H out there alone without his “little dogs.” He mocked the absence of Randy Orton, saying he already ran away earlier, and joked that Ric Flair and Batista probably did the same. Goldberg smirked, signed the contract, then locked eyes with Triple H.

“Hey Triple H… I told you, you’re next. But… When it comes to the World Heavyweight Championship… I’M NEXT!”

Goldberg tossed the mic down and flung the contract at Triple H. Triple H looked disgusted as he picked it up, slowly beginning to read it. He said he came out alone tonight because he’s not afraid of Goldberg. He called Goldberg nothing compared to him, pointing out that he’s already beaten the best WCW had to offer, from Booker T to Scott Steiner, and that Goldberg will just be another name added to the list.

Then Triple H paused. He looked down at the contract and smirked.

“You know… I always have trouble with these things. Might need a little help reading the fine print… Hey boys… come on out and help me read this.”

The crowd erupted in boos as Flair, Batista, and Orton, made their way down to the ring. They climbed onto the apron behind Goldberg, trapping him in the ring. Triple H smiled… and gave the signal. They attacked. Goldberg fought back hard at first, trying to hold his ground against the numbers game, but it quickly became too much. As Goldberg turned his attention toward Orton in the corner..

LOW BLOW!

Flair dropped him. Goldberg staggered backward.. right into Triple H..

PEDIGREE!

The crowd erupted in boos as Triple H stood over him. He motioned for Orton and Batista to pick Goldberg up, holding him in place as Triple H removed his jacket and began unloading right hands to the head. Just when it looked like all hope was lost for Goldberg..

BOOKER T’S MUSIC HIT!

Evolution briefly stopped the beat down as Booker T started to race down to the ring… but then out of nowhere, William Regal came in from the side and BLASTED BOOKER T WITH A HARD RIGHT HAND!! The camera gets a close up and Regal has the brass knuckles on his hand! Regal looks down with disgust at Booker T, before simply walking up the ramp and to the back.

Back in the ring, Triple H laughs at a fallen Booker T, before turning his attention back to Goldberg. He pulls him up..

SECOND PEDIGREE!

Triple H snapped. He screamed down at Goldberg “YOU ARE NOTHING! I’M GONNA SHOW YOU THIS SUNDAY!” But he wasn’t finished. Triple H rolled out of the ring and reached underneath… pulling out his trademark sledgehammer. The crowd buzzed as he climbed back into the ring. Goldberg slowly pulled himself up..

Triple H charged.. And cracked Goldberg over the head! Goldberg collapsed. Triple H picked up the contract, signed it, and shoved it onto Goldberg’s chest. Triple H stood over him, grabbing the World Heavyweight Championship and raising it high as Evolution stood behind him.

Raw faded to black with Triple H standing tall over a fallen Goldberg.

Not sure how long you're planning to keep The Rock around here, but with The Berg going straight for the title, as he should, Rock being used to put somebody else over makes perfect sense. RVD was always super over with the crowd, but he was still a mid carder at this point, so he feels like a really good choice. I've enjoyed the feud so far and I thought the promo to make the match official tonight was written really well. Kudos to you for the dialogue of The Rock's which you wrote out in the interview with Coach, sounded exactly as he should. Tag Title match now being a tables match gets a thumbs up from me.

H being uneasy with the lack of success of Evolution at the beginning of the show, to coming off the brutal attack on Goldberg at the end of the night was a nice transition. Everything was booked fine here, seemingly setting up Goldberg for a run at the title. I figured Booker is still kind of linked to this. I will say that Booker dropping straight into the mid card scene after losing at Mania is a little disappointing. I know he's technically still trying to get at H, but feel like he's dealing more with Orton and co these days. Also think it's a little weird, he isn't facing a member of Evolution at Backlash, and is instead facing Regal. Feels like a bit of a lost opportunity.

And whilst I have no issues with Regal preventing Booker from ending Evolution's attack at the end of show (in fact, I really enjoyed it), I've noticed over the last few Raw's you've referenced Regal landing a right hand. Good to see Regal using the power of the punch, but he's a south paw, so should be referring to him landing lefts not rights. Eh, that's maybe a little nit picky, but it has stood out to me a few times now when reading Raw. The booking of Shawn/Jericho tonight was good to with the attack and Jericho being aided by Christian. No complaints from me. My favourite Victoria is intense, unhinged Victoria, so you can imagine I've been enjoying her booking recently. Any win over Lita feels like a big one so happy with this.

Christian/Hurricane feels really random but is a solid addition to the Backlash card. Steiner/Test at this point hasn't really interested me. I think I've got a sour taste in my mouth from the awfulness they produced as opponents and partners around this time in real life. Feels just like a generic mid card feud, but yeah, I'm just a bit meh about it at this point. These two guys together needs something that's not Stacy Keibler's managerial services to spice things up. I don't want to end this on a negative though because the show was a solid go home show, with every match on the Backlash card getting some form of hype.

Also think the Backlash card is really good, especially the triple main event. My only other point was now that Mania is out of the way, I would have thought we'd start seeing Orton and Batista on PPV cards. Keep on going, mate, things are ticking along nicely.

Thursday Night Smackdown
April 24th, 2003
Nashville, Tennessee

SmackDown kicks off hot as the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar makes his way to the ring. He looks all business, still clearly pissed off from what went down with Kevin Nash last week. Lesnar gets in the ring and wastes no time. He says he’s been thinking about Kevin Nash all week, and he came out here tonight planning to call him out, man to man.

But Nash isn’t here. That draws heavy boos from the crowd. Lesnar says Nash wanted to talk about how he doesn’t see him as the future of WWE. Lesnar shrugs it off.

“You say you don’t think I’m the future of this business? That’s fine.. But when I look at you Kevin Nash, all I see is a broken down has been, who can’t stay healthy long enough to prove he has anything left to give this business.”

The crowd seems to be all behind Lesnar as that line gets a loud reaction. Lesnar continues, saying when he won the WWE Championship, he made a promise, he wasn’t going to back down from anyone. Big Show stepped up, and he put him down.

“Kevin Nash… if you wanna step up next, I’ve got no problem putting you down… Hell, you haven’t done anything since you came back to the WWE except get hurt… but if you want a title match, you’ve got it.”

Lesnar looks straight into the camera.

“Be here next week… if you’ve got the balls.”

MATCH #1: CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: MATT HARDY(C) VS FUNAKI

Much like last week, Matt Hardy controlled the match early, using his advantageous size advantage in the Cruiserweight division. However, Funaki is able to slip away and nearly steals the championship away with a quick roll up!

Because of this, and despite being banned from ringside, Shannon Moore runs down and slides into the ring, immediately causing a distraction. The referee sees it and starts to lose control of the situation, just as Billy Kidman’s music hits.

Kidman rushes to the ring and goes right after Moore. Hardy sees it and quickly gets involved. Within seconds, it turns into a full-on brawl and the referee has no choice but to call for the bell.

NO CONTEST @ 5:02

After the match, Hardy and Moore team up on Kidman, beating him down. Hardy caps it off by planting Kidman with a Twist of Fate, standing over him as Moore looks on… when suddenly Stephanie McMahon’s music hits.

Stephanie walks out with a microphone, clearly not pleased with what she’s seeing. She tells Hardy that ever since he won the Cruiserweight Championship, he’s become more of a problem than a champion in her eyes. But she says she has a solution.

Stephanie announces that at Judgment Day, since Funaki didn’t get a fair opportunity tonight, Matt Hardy will defend the Cruiserweight Championship against him. She then adds that Hardy also seems to have some unfinished business with Billy Kidman… so he’ll be part of the match as well.

But Stephanie isn’t done. She says since Shannon Moore can’t seem to stay out of it, she’s going to solve that problem too. She’s adding Shannon Moore to the match.

At Judgment Day, it will now be a Fatal Four Way for the Cruiserweight Championship. Hardy looks stunned in the ring as Moore seems to be processing everything that just happened.

***

Backstage, Edge is shown getting ready for the triple threat match later tonight when Eddie Guerrero walks into the frame. Eddie tells Edge he’s been thinking about the match, and honestly, he doesn’t think Rey Mysterio even belongs in it.

“I mean, what’s he done lately besides lose?”

Eddie steps a little closer and suggests that maybe the two of them should work together and take Rey out early, and then settle things between themselves once he’s out of the way.

Edge just laughs it off. He tells Eddie he doesn’t need his help, and reminds him that he already proved who the better man was a few weeks ago when he beat him. Eddie gives a nervous laugh, brushing it off, saying he just had a bad night. He pauses for a second, then tells Edge to think about it.

Eddie backs out of the frame, still smiling, clearly trying to plant the idea in Edge’s head as he walks off.

***

MATCH #2: UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING MATCH: JOHN CENA VS RHYNO VS BENOIT

This one is chaotic from the start, with all three men getting their moments throughout the match. Benoit begins to take over late, eventually locking in the Crossface on Rhyno in the center of the ring! It looks like it might be over.. But suddenly, The Big Show and A-Train hit the ring. They go straight after Benoit, breaking up the submission and dragging him out to the floor. They very quickly overwhelm Benoit on the outside. A-Train clears off the announce table and Big Show wastes no time grabbing him and planting him with a chokeslam straight through the announce table!! Benoit is left laid out.

Back in the ring, Rhyno is slowly getting back to his feet, trying to regroup… But John Cena slides in behind him. Cena lifts him up and drills him with the F-U!

1… 2… 3.

WINNER: JOHN CENA via PINFALL @ 9:12

Cena quickly rolls out of the ring, able to steal a victory and get one step closer to the United States Championship. The camera lingers around Chris Benoit, laid out on the wreckage of the announce table, with Big Show and A-Train standing tall over him, sending a message tonight.

***

A video promo for Sean O’Haire airs next. He’s sitting in a dimly lit room, calm and composed, almost too calm. There’s a slight smirk on his face as he begins to speak.

O’Haire says his words have already gotten under The Undertaker’s skin. He says people like Undertaker don’t like being questioned… especially by someone who sees right through them. He pauses for a moment before continuing, saying that nothing he does is without purpose. Everything is calculated.

O’Haire leans forward slightly and issues the challenge. Next week, he wants The Undertaker in the ring… man to man… face to face.

“I’m not asking for violence… yet. But that’s sure to come. I just want a conversation. I’m not here to fight you just yet, Deadman. I’m just wanting to show you who you really are. To guide you into that light.”

O’Haire laughs, a very unsettling, dark laugh.

“And deep down… Undertaker… you know I’m right.”

MATCH #3: APA vs FBI (CHUCK PALUMBO AND JOHNNY STAMBOLI)

To the surprise of the crowd, Palumbo and Stamboli came out strong, taking control early in the match. It looks like a bit of ring rust from APA, as the FBI keep Farooq down and grounded in the ring. They use quick tags to stay in control, keeping Bradshaw out of the match.

Faarooq eventually fights his way free and makes the hot tag. Bradshaw hits the ring and immediately clears house. He levels Stamboli, then turns his attention to Palumbo, dropping him with a heavy right hand. Nunzio jumps up on the apron to try and cause a distraction, but Bradshaw shuts that down quickly with a stiff right hand that knocks him back to the floor.

Bradshaw sets Stamboli up for a powerbomb, but Palumbo rushes in and clubs him from behind to break it up. That brings Faarooq back into the ring, who ducks a clothesline and plants Palumbo with a spinebuster! Stamboli swings at Faarooq with a right hand, but Farooq ducks.. And when Stamboli turns back around, he walks right into a massive Clothesline from Hell!

1… 2… 3.

WINNERS: APA via PINFALL @ 5:18

***

Backstage, Rey Mysterio is shown getting ready for the triple threat match later tonight when Eddie Guerrero steps into the frame. Eddie comes in with a smile and offers a handshake. There’s a brief pause before Rey, a little hesitant, accepts it.

Eddie lowers his voice and tells Rey he’s been thinking… Maybe they should work together out there tonight. Take Edge out first, and then settle it between themselves, man to man. He leans in a bit more and brings up their shared heritage, saying how big it would be, how right it would feel, if someone with Hispanic heritage walked out of Judgment Day as the United States Champion.

Rey lets out a small laugh and nods, saying yeah, it would be great…

“But that’s exactly what’s gonna happen after I win tonight. Thanks for the offer… but no thanks.”

Eddie’s smile fades instantly. His expression shifts from friendly to frustrated in a split second. He clearly doesn’t like the answer, and storms out of the frame.

***

Backstage, Vince McMahon is in his office, talking on the phone, when Roddy Piper suddenly bursts into the room. Vince quickly tells the person on the other end he has to go and hangs up. He turns with a big smile, asking Piper if he’s ready for tonight. Piper says he’s always ready to beat Hulk Hogan’s ass.. But then Piper’s tone quickly changes.

He tells Vince that over the past few weeks, he’s noticed something… Vince keeps changing things, moving away from what they originally talked about.

“You know Vince… it’s starting to feel like you’re trying to treat me like your bitch.”

That line gets some ooooh’s from the crowd. Vince brushes it off with a slight laugh, saying that’s not what he’s doing at all. He reminds Piper who he’s dealing with.

“Roddy… I’m Vincent Kennedy McMahon. If I wanted to make you do something, you’d do it.”

That sets Piper off. He steps right into Vince’s face.

“Oh yeah?”

There’s a moment of real tension between the two… But Vince immediately softens it, raising his hands slightly, calming the situation down.

“Relax… that’s not what I’m doing.
I appreciate everything you’ve done. And trust me… there’s more to come… Don’t forget the ultimate goal.”

Piper stares at him for a moment, still clearly not fully trusting him, before slowly backing off.

***

MATCH #4: UNITED STATES QUALIFYING MATCH: EDGE VS EDDIE GUERRERO VS REY MYSTERIO

These three are given plenty of time, and they make the most of it.

Late in the match, Rey Mysterio connects with a 619 on Edge, sending the crowd into a frenzy. As Rey looks to follow up, Eddie slides in out of nowhere, knocking Rey off the apron and immediately going for the cover on Edge.

1… 2… Edge kicks out!

Rey quickly gets back into the ring, and he and Eddie begin exchanging strikes. Rey gains the upper hand and sets Eddie up for the 619.. But Eddie ducks at the last second. Rey spins back around.. Right into a massive spear from Edge!

Edge hooks the leg.

1… 2… 3.

Eddie dives in to break it up, but he’s just a split second too late.

WINNER: EDGE via PINFALL @ 11:14

Michael Cole and Tazz are on commentary as a replay is shown of Sean O’Haire’s chilling challenge to The Undertaker from earlier in the night. As the footage ends, Tazz says he’s just gotten official word that The Undertaker has accepted. Next week, Undertaker and O’Haire will meet in the ring, face to face. Cole hypes it up, saying this situation has been slowly building for weeks now.

The show then transitions into a split-screen shot, showing Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper both walking backstage toward the ring. Cole and Tazz start putting over the magnitude of the upcoming main event. They talk about the history between Hogan and Piper, mentioning the battles they’ve had over the years and how many times these two have headlined shows against each other.

Tazz adds that it doesn’t matter how many years go by, when Hogan and Piper are in the same ring, it’s always personal. The tension builds as both men continue their walk, the crowd buzzing as the main event is just moments away.

***

MATCH #5: NO DISQUALIFICATION: HULK HOGAN VS RODDY PIPER

This one is all about the story, not the wrestling. Before the match can even officially get underway, Vince McMahon makes his way down to the ring. He tears off his shirt to reveal a referee shirt underneath, announcing himself as the special guest referee.

Hogan gets the early advantage, overpowering Piper. He even hits a Big Boot followed by a Leg Drop. That should be it.. But Vince refuses to count.

The crowd erupts as Hogan realizes what’s going on. He pulls Piper back up and starts unloading with right hands, but Vince jumps in from behind, attacking Hogan with shots to the back. It barely fazes him. Hogan turns around and starts advancing on Vince, who quickly bails out of the ring, not wanting any part of it. That momentary distraction gives Piper time to recover, and he takes control as Hogan turns back around.

Piper slows the pace down, taking advantage of the situation, and eventually calls for Vince to bring a steel chair into the ring. Vince obliges. Piper holds Hogan in place as Vince swings… But Hogan ducks! The chair connects flush with Piper’s head!!

Vince freezes, looking down at Piper, realizing what just happened. Slowly, it sinks in. He’s now alone in the ring with Hogan. Vince turns around, right into a massive shot from Hogan! Hogan unloads with right hands, backing Vince up across the ring before whipping him off the ropes, looking for the Big Boot… But Vince grabs the ropes and bails out to the floor, escaping just in time. Hogan grabs the steel chair and dares Vince to come back in, but Vince isn’t moving.

Behind Hogan, Piper starts to stir. Hogan turns, sees it, and doesn’t hesitate. He blasts Piper with a chair shot to the head, putting him right back down! Hogan drops to the mat and makes the cover. But there’s no referee. And Vince surely isn’t going to get back in the ring to make the 3 count… Hogan looks around, realizes it, and then just starts counting himself.

1… 2… 3!

Winner? Via pinfall?: Hulk Hogan @ 8:36

Hogan stands tall in the ring, playing to the crowd with a slight, over the top celebration, but they love it. Vince watches from the outside, anger all over his face. For the first time in weeks, Vince looks unsure. Has he just made a mistake by pushing Hulk Hogan this far?

OFFICIAL BACKLASH PREVIEW

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
TRIPLE H (c) vs GOLDBERG

Triple H entered WrestleMania XIX with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Booker T. Thanks in large part to Evolution, Triple H was able to retain the championship and appeared he was going to continue his dominance over Monday Night Raw. Unfortunately for The Game, those plans were quickly interrupted by the shocking arrival of Goldberg.

The night after WrestleMania, Goldberg made his WWE debut and immediately set his sights on Triple H and the World Heavyweight Championship. Goldberg wasted no time making his intentions known, delivering a Spear to Triple H before informing him that he was next.

Triple H insisted that Goldberg had done nothing to earn a championship opportunity, which Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff initially agreed with. Bischoff forced Goldberg to defeat 3 Minute Warning in a Handicap Match in order to earn a title shot at Backlash. Goldberg overcame the odds and defeated the powerful duo, with a little help from Booker T, who helped neutralize Evolution at ringside.

Triple H once again attempted to have Goldberg removed from the match. Bischoff responded by placing Goldberg in a match against a mystery opponent, with his championship opportunity hanging in the balance. That mystery opponent turned out to be the returning Viscera. Goldberg made quick work of the 500-pound giant, defeating him in just 38 seconds.

On the final Raw before Backlash, Triple H and Goldberg met face-to-face for the contract signing. For the first time in weeks, Evolution managed to gain the upper hand, overwhelming Goldberg in a four-on-one assault. The attack ended with Triple H delivering two Pedigrees and a vicious sledgehammer shot to Goldberg's head. The question heading into Backlash is simple: was it enough to stop Goldberg?

WRESTLEMANIA XIX REMATCH
SHAWN MICHAELS vs CHRIS JERICHO

Chris Jericho was sent into a downward spiral following his loss to Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIX. Refusing to accept defeat, Jericho attacked Michaels from behind with a steel chair and then delivered the ultimate sign of disrespect by spitting on him. As far as Jericho was concerned, their rivalry was far from over.

The following week, Michaels confronted Jericho and admitted that he had once respected him as a competitor. However, after months of low blows, sneak attacks, and cheap shots, Michaels made it clear that he had lost every ounce of respect he once had for Y2J. Jericho continued insisting that WrestleMania was nothing more than a fluke and claimed he was the better man. Michaels immediately offered him a rematch that very night, but Jericho declined, choosing instead to wait until Backlash.

On the final Raw before the event, Michaels sat down with Jim Ross for an interview. HBK reflected on their battle at WrestleMania and admitted that after the match he believed the two shared a mutual respect. Jericho clearly disagreed. Jericho interrupted the interview and launched another sneak attack, this time with assistance from Christian. The assault culminated with Jericho locking Michaels in the Walls of Jericho while repeatedly screaming, "I'M BETTER THAN YOU, SHAWN!"

SINGLES MATCH
THE ROCK vs ROB VAN DAM

Fresh off finally defeating Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIX, The Rock announced that he would be remaining on Raw for the foreseeable future in order to "cement his legacy."

Later that night, Rock and Rob Van Dam crossed paths backstage. The encounter quickly turned hostile after Rock accused RVD of nearly ruining his expensive designer vest. RVD responded by suggesting the vest looked like something he picked up at Goodwill, leaving The Great One completely appalled.

The following week, RVD defeated Christian in singles competition, but his celebration was short-lived. The Rock attacked him from behind and left him laid out with a Rock Bottom.

The next week, Rock was absent due to what were described as "Hollywood obligations." In his absence, RVD took to the ring and challenged Rock to a match at Backlash, even referring to him as "The Shit One."

On the final Raw before Backlash, the two men finally met face-to-face. Rock initially refused the challenge, dismissing RVD as nothing more than a "bingo hall wrestler." RVD questioned whether Rock was avoiding the match because he had never faced anyone like him before and couldn't keep up with his style. Rock responded with a cheap shot, but RVD fought back and eventually sent The Rock crashing to the floor with a kick. Later that evening, Rock officially accepted the challenge while leaving the arena, warning RVD that he had better be careful what he wished for.

INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FINAL
BOOKER T vs WILLIAM REGAL

Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff officially reactivated the Intercontinental Championship and announced an eight-man tournament to crown a new champion at Backlash.

Still reeling from his controversial loss to Triple H at WrestleMania, Booker T entered the tournament. Before his opening-round match against Randy Orton, Booker attempted a run-in on Triple H and Evolution, who were cutting an in-ring promo, but the group wanted absolutely nothing to do with Booker T.

Booker defeated Orton in the quarterfinals, while William Regal advanced by defeating Maven. Booker made it clear that while he intended to win the tournament and the Intercontinental Championship, he was far from finished with Triple H and Evolution.

In the semifinals, Regal defeated Hurricane while Booker overcame Mark Henry despite interference from Ric Flair. The finals were officially set. Booker T vs William Regal.

On the last Raw before Backlash, Booker T and Regal met face-to-face. Regal warned Booker that he was making a serious mistake by focusing all his time on Triple H and Evolution, and overlooking the man he would be facing at Backlash. Booker admitted that he had become consumed by what Evolution had done to him, but promised that he wasn't overlooking Regal. To prove it, Booker reminded Regal exactly what he was capable of with a stiff right hand that sent the Englishman retreating.

Later that same night, Booker attempted to come to Goldberg's aid during Evolution's attack, only to be intercepted by Regal, who blasted him with a brass knuckle-assisted left hand!

WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
TABLES MATCH
LANCE STORM & CHIEF MORLEY (c) vs THE DUDLEY BOYZ

The night after WrestleMania, the Dudley Boyz challenged Lance Storm and Chief Morley for the World Tag Team Championships. The champions retained, but only after Morley smashed D-Von in the head with a championship belt while the referee was distracted.

The following week, the Dudleys confronted the champions backstage and questioned whether they were capable of winning a match without cheating. Bubba Ray made it clear that they weren't finished chasing the championships.

A week later, after defeating La Resistance, the Dudleys once again called out the champions. Morley responded by offering them a rematch at Backlash, but with one major condition: if the Dudleys lost, they would never receive another World Tag Team Championship opportunity. The Dudleys immediately accepted.

On the final Raw before Backlash, Bubba Ray and Lance Storm met in singles competition. Chief Morley's interference led to a disqualification and a massive brawl. The chaos ended with Lance Storm eating a 3-D. D-Von brought a table into the ring, but Storm managed to pull Morley to safety before the Dudleys could put him through it. Bubba then issued one final challenge. If the champions wanted a stipulation, then the Dudleys wanted one too. A Tables Match! Eric Bischoff loved the idea and immediately made it official.

SINGLES MATCH
TEST vs SCOTT STEINER

The issues between Test and Scott Steiner began during the first-ever Big Poppa Pump Open Challenge. Steiner defeated Al Snow, but his celebration was cut short when Test blindsided him with a devastating Big Boot!

The following week, Steiner spent the entire night searching for Test, only to once again find himself on the receiving end of another surprise attack and another Big Boot. On the final Raw before Backlash, Steiner defeated Maven and immediately called out Test.

Test answered the challenge and admitted that he had never liked Steiner. He claimed many of the boys in the locker room felt the same way and had enjoyed watching him lay Steiner out week after week. Test accused Steiner of walking around like he was some kind of big bad ass, which he didn’t agree with. The comments infuriated Steiner, who immediately challenged Test to a fight. Test declined to fight that night but promised Steiner that if he wanted a fight, he would get one. At Backlash.

SINGLES MATCH
THE HURRICANE vs CHRISTIAN

The rivalry between Hurricane and Christian began during the opening round of the Intercontinental Championship Tournament. Christian appeared to have Hurricane beaten, but his arrogance got the better of him. Hurricane capitalized and pulled off a shocking upset victory. The following week, Christian faced Rob Van Dam and once again allowed his overconfidence to cost him. After suffering consecutive defeats, Christian began to unravel.

During Hurricane's semifinal match against William Regal, Christian distracted Hurricane, which allowed Regal to take advantage and advanced to the finals.

Not satisfied with simply costing Hurricane the match, Christian attacked him after the bell and left him laying with an Unprettier. Following the attack, Eric Bischoff made the match official. At Backlash, Christian gets the opportunity to avenge the embarrassment of his tournament loss, while Hurricane looks to prove that his earlier victory was no fluke.

It's fun to follow this from the start, and see the hard work lead you towards the first PPV of the project. Excited to see this one play out.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Triple H(c) vs Goldberg
Goldberg is just too hot right now. A screw job finish isn't out of the question since after all, it is the first PPV post-WM. I'm going with Goldberg though, as he has been built up very strongly, and this is one of those rare chances to right a real life wrong fresh out of the gate.

WRESTLEMANIA REMATCH
Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho
Jericho gets his win back, plus you can keep this rivalry going as long as you want because it is so great.

SINGLES MATCH
The Rock vs Rob Van Dam
I almost picked RVD here, and it would make sense if RVD did win. However, I'm going with The Rock simply because I can't see him losing to RVD at this juncture. Plus. if Goldberg is winning, a face vs face with RVD doesn't really fit.

INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FINAL
Booker T vs William Regal
I loved Regal's reigns as IC champ back in the day. Booker T can chase it throughout the summer.

WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
TABLES MATCH
Lance Storm & Chief Morley(c) vs The Dudleys
Fuck it, all titles are changing hands tonight! The Dudleys in their specialty match pick up the win.

SINGLES MATCH
Test vs Scott Steiner
This is already more enjoyable than the shit sandwich we got in real life lol. If booked properly, which you are doing right now, Steiner can be a player for you on Raw moving forward.

SINGLES MATCH
The Hurricane vs Christian
Hurricane is a fun character, but Christian has more legs.

Bonus Questions
1. What match will open the show? TAG TITLE MATCH
2. What will the 3rd match on the show be? IC TITLE MATCH
3. Will there be a referee bump during ANY match on the show? Yes, during the Rock/RVD match
4. Which superstar will be put through a table during the Tables Match? Lance Storm

Best of luck with this! I'll be waiting for it to drop!

Really solid start to this. I'm really happy that despite being in the early stages you've already put your own spin on WWE '03 with a drastically different Backlash card.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Triple H(c) vs Goldberg
I respect you getting this booked early instead of waiting for a bigger show like SummerSlam. In saying that, it seems too small time for Goldberg to win the belt? Regardless, I'll pick him with maybe a shenanigans finish to protect Helmsley.

WRESTLEMANIA REMATCH
Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho
I actually didn't love the idea of HBK going over in their match at Mania 19, so I'm all in favor of righting that wrong and putting Y2J over in your story. Likely to heat him up for Goldberg down the line.

SINGLES MATCH
The Rock vs Rob Van Dam
Feels like RVD is low on the card for Rocky to lose to just after beating Hogan and Austin back to back... but if RVD loses Rock was right about him being a bingo hall wrestler. I'll go with the babyface for an upset win.

INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FINAL
Booker T vs William Regal
I don't think there's a path for Book to get the Big Gold with Bill in the picture chasing HHH and I seriously don't think he can afford another loss after falling short at Mania. It's a consolation prize, but it can rebuild Booker for most of this year.

WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
TABLES MATCH
Lance Storm & Chief Morley(c) vs The Dudleys
The "never can challenge again" stip typically says the babyfaces go over but I'm just so over The Dudley Boyz at this point and I've got babyfaces winning the other title matches. Keep the belts on Bischoff's cronies till a better team comes along.

SINGLES MATCH
Test vs Scott Steiner
Love both, but this story is working to wipe away the stink of the HHH program and could heat Scotty up for an IC feud with Booker which I like the sound of.

SINGLES MATCH
The Hurricane vs Christian
I think there's more value in Christian, but I feel like the trajectory would be this setting him up chasing Book and the IC belt which already happened IRL, so I'm not interested in that. Hurricane was on a run here so why not keep going with a serious push I guess.

Bonus Questions
1. What match will open the show? Intercontinental Title
2. What will the 3rd match on the show be? Test/Steiner
3. Will there be a referee bump during ANY match on the show? Main Event
4. Which superstar will be put through a table during the Tables Match? Bubba Ray
