WWF OCTOBER 1993 UPDATE (PART TWO)
“THE DREAM TEAM”
STING.
If you're just joining this BTB for the first time, your eyes do not deceive you! This WWF 1993 update features Sting. There's a reason this is called IT’S SHOWTIME after all.
In this universe, Sting had become disenchanted with his spot in World Championship Wrestling with the return of Ric Flair and heavy rumors that Turner was going to make the move to bring in Hulk Hogan once his WWF contract expired at the end of the year.
As a result, Sting shocked the wrestling world on July 4th. The WWF Stars and Stripes challenge was not going the way the American wrestlers and athletes had hoped as no one had managed to lift up and slam the former WWF champion Yokozuna. Just when it seemed like all hope was lost… a helicopter arrived!
You've heard this story you say? Well, not so fast buckaroo because stepping off the helicopter… was not who your history might have told you it was. No, it was THE MAN THEY CALL STING!
Sting was able to slam Yokozuna to the mat which lead to Sting signing with the WWF and taking his Deadly Venom tour across this great country, meeting with the fans and building tow Yokozuna, a match that would be won by Sting in his debut at WWF Summerslam.
After SummerSlam, Sting stepping up to the plate for America to challenge some other anti-Americans in the form of Pierre Ouellet and Jacques Rougeau - QUEBECERS.
With the numbers against him, Sting had offers of help from THE SMOKING GUNNS as well as a familiar name from his past, LEX LUGER.
Since Sting has arrived, Luger has been insistent that he and Sting were the best of friends...despite Luger still being the cheat to win bad guy that had turned his back on Sting numerous times in their career.
So despite Luger's friendly act, you can imagine the Stinger was a little hesitant to trust Lex. However, Sting did have a tag partner in mind. And the only thing he had to say was that his partner was a… Real American.
And that...is where we find ourselves for the October 18th episode of WWF Raw.

And that...is where we find ourselves for the October 18th episode of WWF Raw.
“WE'RE NOT THE MOUNTIES” The New York fanbase made their feelings towards the French Canadians made their way out to the ring. It was nothing but loud boos for the foreigners as Pierre Oulette proudly waved the Canadian flag ignoring the heat from the crowd. The pair climbed into the ring while Ouellet grabbed the microphone. PIERRE OUELLET "ASSEYEZ-VOUS ET ECOUTEZ!" Of course, the speaking of French in New York does not go over well with the fans as Rougeau takes over on the mic. JACQUES ROUGEAU "Shut up you American ingrates! Again, they weren't exactly endearing themselves to the fans. JACQUES ROUGEAU "Boo us all you want, you're just mad that you're about to watch what happens in this ring! Because let's face it, Le Stinger does not have a partner willing to team with such a pompous, egomaniac like him? The only people willing to team with him, he sent away! WHAT A FOOL! HAHAHAHA” Ouellet joined in on the laughter. JACQUES ROUGEAU “Now, please show your respect for the greatest anthem in the world. THE CANADIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM!” Rougeau and Ouellet began their awful French rendition of the anthem… THE QUEBECERS “O, Canada! terre de nos aïeux, Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux. Car ton bras sait porter l’épée, Il sait porter la croix.” “HERE COMES THE MAN THEY CALL STING” Mercifully for everyone’s ears, the rockin’ tunes of Sting’s new WWF theme interrupts the grating sound of Ouellet and Rougeau’s voices. The fans rise to their feet as Sting made his way out with his face paint rocking a red and yellow theme. HMMM.. how convenient, no? The cheers grow as the fans have a feeling they know what is going to be happening here after Sting had previously hyped up his partner as a “Real American.” Sting walked halfway down the aisle, stopping, with his hands on his hips as his music came to a stop. JACQUES ROUGEAU “JUST AS I SAID! NO PARTNER! What’s the matter Stinger, run out of people willing to deal with your BIG HEAD?!” Sting remained silent but then turned toward the entrance… “REAL AMERICAN” Could it really be? YES! YES IT WAS! Out from the back, the red and yellow warrior himself made his way out! HULK HOGAN STOMPED out from the back to a huge ovation from the WWF crowd. Heenan commented that it was a fitting partner for an egomaniac like Sting… the ULTIMATE Egomaniac himself in Hulk Hogan. Now, Hogan hadn’t been since Summerslam where he lost his WWF Championship to Bret Hart and rumors indicated he was on his way out the door. Some suggested we may not see Hogan in a WWF ring again! But here he was… standing SIDE BY SIDE with the MAN THEY CALL STING! Sting and Hogan looked to one another… before RUSHING TO THE RING! THE QUEBECERS vs. STING & HULK HOGAN Sting and Hogan went right at Rougeau and Ouellet, trading right and left hands with the two huge fan favorites quickly getting the upper hand on the the French Canadians and it was not long before the pair went tumbling to ringside to regroup as Sting and Hogan took a moment to play to the crowd - Hogan flexing and posing with his hand to his ear as Sting climbed the turnbuckles, brought his hands to his mouth and let out a big: WOOOOO! Before being count out, Jacques Rougeau would enter the ring and made his way to the center of the ring, going back and forth with Sting as the legal man, but Sting was still in complete control until a distraction in the form Ouellet on the apron allowed Rougeau to attack Sting from behind to turn the tables. This would only be a brief heat segment on Sting because he would immediately pop back up after a double back suplex from Rougeau and Oulette - no selling the move to a roar from the crowd. A nervous Pierre and Rougeau turn around and receive… a DOUBLE LARIAT from Sting! Sting made the tag in to Hogan and in came the Hulkster, immediately being met with a right hand from Pierre, but Hogan BLOCKED IT and then wagged his finger right in the face of the larger Quebecer and then unleashed flurry of right hands before lifting up Ouellet into a Gorilla Press mat! Meanwhile, Sting sent Rougeau into the corner...STINGER SPLASH! Sting then looked to Hogan, before whipping Rougeau out of the corner right into… BIG BOOT TO ROUGEAU! HOGAN BOUNCED OFF THE ROPES LEGDROP! Hogan with the cover. One - Two - Three! These two “American Heroes” score the win in the first time teaming with one another! Winners: Hulk Hogan and Sting by pinfall in 5:21 After the match, Ouellet and Rougea headed away from the ring in defeat. Hogan continued to celebrate and pose for the fans before Sting walked over and grabbed a microphone. STING "WOOO! What a night, Hulkster! I know a lot of people out ther two of us team up in this ring...but HERE WEA fired up Hogan paced back and forth, nodding his head in agreement as Sting handed him the microphone. HULK HOGAN "LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHIN' STINGER....last Summer, the top basketball players in the world came together… Jordan....Magic Johnson...Larry Bird...Patrick Ewing...David Robinson… and they rolled through Barcelona straight to the Gold Medals… and they called them…. THE DREAM TEAM! BUT BROTHER, IF YOU THAT WAS A DREAM TEAM - NO, NO, NO… I DON’T THINK SO. RIGHT HERE… THE HULKSTER… THE STINGER…”“THIS IS THE REAL DREAM TEAM, BROTHER!” Hogan and Sting lifted each other's arm up victorious as Sting took the microphone back. STING "I gotta say Hulk, this was a heck of a lot of fun tonight...and if you think that was fun… Ithink we can do these fans one even better...are you thinking what I’m thinking HULKSTER?" Hogan grinned, nodding along. HULK HOGAN “You know something, Stinger… I think I can smell what you got cookin’! Because there’s only ONE thing that’s been on my mind since Summerslam, dude. And that’s BRET HART! A man who got away RED HANDED with BURGLARY of the Hulkster at Summerslam, and BRET - if you thought I was just gonna sit around and let you get away with that… YOU GOT ANOTHER THING COMING, BROTHER!” STING “That’s right, Hulkster! And it just so happens, I was lookin’ at my calendar earlier tonight and I had a little date circled. A little event coming up next month… a little event called…. SURVIVOR SERIES! And you’re right, I think it’s time for some payback and I’d love to join you at Survivor Series for just that. HULK HOGAN “NNNNNOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW we’re talkin’ brother! BRET HART! That’s right, Survivor Series is just around the corner… so how about you bring that little pipsqueak, yellow bellied brother of yours… and that big tub of lard who’s been hanging around with you lately… BAM SCAM PIGALOW… AND ANYONE ELSE STUPID ENOUGH to want to associate with a bunch of cowards… and me and the Stinger… WE’LL BE READY FOR YOU!” STING “But wait! Hulkster… we’re just TWO people. Survivor Series… we have to find two people who have big enough issues with The Harts to team up with us? Where will we possibly find anyone like that?” HULK HOGAN “You know something, brother… I don’t think that’s gonna be a problem.” “PRIDES OF MICHIGAN” On cue, the music of the now FORMER WWF Tag Champions - The STEINER BROTHERS - hit the speakers and out walk Rick and Scott Steiner, decked out in their Michigan letterman jackets to a very welcome reaction from the fans. They slap some hands of the fans in the front row as they make their way out, as we’re reminded that it was Bret and Owen Hart who just took their tag titles away from them. They join Sting and Hogan in the ring. STING “Well… well… WELL! If it isn’t a couple of familiar faces to me. Rick… Scott… I understand you guys may have a bit of a bone to pick with the Hart Family. SCOTT STEINER “You better believe we do, STINGER! You guys think you can just steal our belts just like you stole Hogan’s WWF Championship?! I DON’ THINK SO! No way Jose!” RICK STEINER “Yeah! And you know what they say… what goes around… COMES AROUND!” SCOTT STEINER “And boy is it about to come back around! Just know we WILL get those belts back when it’s all said and done… but first… SURVIVOR SERIES… we would be MORE than happy to join up with two of the biggest names in this business and takes you guys out!” STING “I THINK WE HAVE OUR ANSWER, HULKSTER! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! IT LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE OURSELVES… A REAL DREAM TEAM RIGHT HERE!” HULK HOGAN “You got that right! BRET HART… OWEN HART… PIGALOW…. When Survivor Series comes rollin’ around…. WHATCHA GONNA DO… WHEN HULKAMANIA… AND THE DREAM TEAM… RUNS WILD… ON YOUUUUUUUU!” With that, “Real American” hit the speakers once again as all four members of the newly formed Survivor Series team climb one of the four corners of the ring to play to the crowd. |
And thus - The Dream Team was formed!
And while there was still an opening on the Hart Family Side of things, the Dream team was all set. Though, not EVERYONE was happy about the news of the formation of the Dream Team. There was one person in particular who didn’t think any Dream Team was complete without him and that was “THE NARCISSIST” LEX LUGER.
As previously mentioned, Luger had been positioning himself as Sting’s best friend since Sting made his debut, though it has been pointed out that their past indicates their relationship is strenuous at best. However, on WWF Superstars following Sting and Hogan’s announcement, Jim Ross would interview Luger and he would voice his disappointment of not being included. Though Luna Vachon, the “Beast” to his “Beauty,” scolded Luger for being so worried about Sting when he should just go out and make a statement.
SHAWN MICHAELS.
The reigning and defending Intercontinental Champion, "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels has faced several challenges since WrestleMania but by hook or by crook remained champion each time. We've seen him have to deal with the return of former Rocker Marty Jannetty, as well as Jannetty's protégé, "The 1-2-3 Kid." More recently Shawn Michaels took on "The Macho Man" Randy Savage at SummerSlam, but once again it was Shawn Michaels walking away victorious - adding another legend to his resume...and his ego, referring to himself as "The Greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time."
Shawn hasn't done it by himself, mind you. At King of the Ring, HBK introduced his new bodyguard - FLASH NORTON. Norton, a former professional bodyguard, has not only been a dominating force instrumental in many of HBK's title defenses - but also has started making a name for himself. In a short period of time, his Shoulder Breaker finisher has become one of the most dangerous moves in wrestling - each wrestler who has felt the Shoulder Breaker have left the ring on their back...including most recently King of the Ring winner RAZOR RAMON.
RANDY SAVAGE.
Randy Savage has spent most of 1993 at the commentary booth, seemingly leaving his in-ring career behind him as he became one of the voices of the WWF Raw as it debuted earlier this year.
However, week after week of listening to HBK's constant proclamations as the Greatest Intercontinental Champion of All Time didn't sit well with the former champion. But it was an assault HBK and Norton were performing on Chris Candido during Raw that finally sent Savage over the edge - leading him to violate WWF policy by entering the ring and laying his hands on Michaels and Norton.
But Savage was okay with that because that led him back into action. His first course of action was challenging Michaels at SummerSlam for the Intercontinental Championship. Unfortunately, Flash Norton would play a role in the match, attacking Savage with the Shoulder Breaker - leaving Savage effectively fighting with one arm for the remainder of the match. Savage would eventually fall victim to the Sweet Chin Music Music after missing an Elbow Drop (attempting to utilize his good arm).
The defeat didn't sit well with Savage, who has challenged Michaels to a Survivor Series match with Savage putting together an "Intercontinental All Star Team" that has former Intercontinental Champion TITO SANTANA on it while Michaels consists of his bodyguard Flash Norton and Diesel.
DIESEL.
Diesel made his official WWF debut in vignettes at King of the Ring as Harvey Wippleman was searching for the biggest and baddest man possible to go against THE UNDERTAKER for him. Diesel, a badass trucker and hired gun, aligned himself with Wippleman after Wippleman promised him fame, fortune, and competition. Diesel accepted the challenge and in perhaps an upset, he would defeat The Undertaker.
With Undertaker seemingly out of the picture, having stolen an urn and disappeared, Diesel and Wippleman were approached by Shawn Michaels. Michaels liked what he had seen so far of Diesel, and agreed to give Diesel a spot on his team for Survivor Series in exchange for a future shot at the WWF Intercontinental Title.
Which brings us to the October 25th episode of Raw, as Shawn Michaels was set to announce the fourth and final member of his team.
The always confident "Heart Break Kid" Shawn Michaels was brought to the ring by Vince McMahon for an in-ring interview. Michaels was joined not only by his ever-present bodyguard Flash Norton but also by his other Survivor Series teammate Diesel and his manager Harvey Wippleman. Diesel made his way behind HBK and Norton, his association clearly only business related and not interested in hanging out with either man. In fact, he and Norton exchanged tense looks to one another during the upcoming interview.Vince was quick to point out that it was Shawn Michaels who had accepted Savage's challenge and wanted to know just what Michaels was thinking.HBK is, of course, not one to be shy so he was happy to answer. SHAWN MICHAELS "I have to admit, I'm a little annoyed by 'THE MACHO MAN' Randy Savage. How disappointing it is for a man that most of these idiots here in the crowd worship to be such a pathetic and sore loser?" Michaels laughs as he gives Norton a pat on the shoulder. Norton smirked. Michaels turned to share a laugh with Diesel...who was disinterested. Shawn seemed to shiver a bit at the cold shoulder from Diesel before continuing. SHAWN MICHAELS "A bigger man would've taken his loss like a man and walked away with dignity. But that's not Randy Savage, now is it?" VINCE McMAHON "Now wait just one minute here - we both know this man right here had a little something to do with that win, now didn't he..." SHAWN MICHAELS "Did someone ask you a question, McMahon? No - then keep your mouth shut until it's interview time. Did Savage lose or not?" Shawn stared at Vince, waiting for an answer but Vince just stared back silently before responding. VINCE McMAHON "Oh, I can talk now?" SHAWN MICHAELS "This time I asked you a question - keep up, McMahon before I slap that stupid look off your mouth." VINCE McMAHON "Yes, the record will indicate that 'The Macho Man' Randy Savage lost at SummerSlam. However..." SHAWN MICHAELS "That's what I thought! End of story. HE LOST. This should be over but Nooooooooooooooo - he just can't give up. He comes crawling back begging for another shot with the Greatest Intercontinental Champion of All Time. Either he's crazy or stupid." HARVEY WIPPLEMAN "Or maybe both!" Wippleman had leaned over to add his comment, but Shawn snatched the microphone away and glared at Wippleman. SHAWN MICHAELS “Excuse me? No one asked for your thoughts, Wippleboy. Since Savage wants to turn this into a Survivor Series showdown, you guys are here to be part of my team. That's the deal we agreed to - but make no mistake about it - this is MY team." Wippleman backed down, offering his apologies as he back pedaled away. Diesel seemed to be growing bored, now leaning against the turnbuckles. SHAWN MICHAELS "Now speaking of MY team...there's still one spot left and that's why we're here tonight to reveal...that that spot is no longer open! And I'm sure all these people know just who it is, don't they?!" A mixed reaction filled the arena as Michaels smirked. VINCE McMAHON "Well, are you going to tell us or what?" SHAWN MICHAELS "Don't get your panties in a bunch, McMahon. We're getting to that. Savage has some type of point to prove in this little vendetta he has against me. He thinks bringing a bunch of 'former' Intercontinental Champions like that is supposed to make me shake in my boots or somethin'. I'm pretty sure I've beaten just about every one of those morons. First of all, I've already beaten Savage himself just two months ago and embarrassed him. He can go round up Marty Jannetty for all I care, I'll beat him too. There ain't anybody he can find that I haven't beaten!" Michaels paused for a moment, adjusting his sunglasses. SHAWN MICHAELS "However, HBK is always one step ahead of his opponents and that's why the final member of...The Heartbreakers...is ALSO a former Intercontinental Champion...and perhaps...dare I say it, the SECOND BEST Intercontinental Champion of all time, behind myself of course. IN FACT - this man is, FOR NOW, the LONGEST REIGNING Intercontinental Champion of ALL TIME! I PRESENT TO YOU..." "COOL, COCKY, BAD" Sauntering out from the back, dressed in his Elvis-esque best, THE HONKY TONK MAN walked out with his guitar slung over his back to a round of boos. Honky was all smiles, making his return to a WWF ring for the first time in years. Shawn Michaels was grinning widely but Diesel didn't seem impressed at all.Honky Tonk Man climbed into the ring and met Shawn Michaels with a handshake. VINCE McMAHON "I...I can't believe my eyes. The Honky Tonk Man is BACK in the WWF!" HONKY TONK MAN "Oh you better believe it, Vince! You shoulda known that the hit man of rhythm and blues would return! You can't keep the greatest down, baby - HBK knows all about greatness! And tell me this - how can you possibly call your team the INTERCONTINENTAL ALL STARS when THIS team right here has the TWO GREATEST INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONS OF ALL TIME?! Honky Tonk Man is back and ready to play the 'greatest hits' with Shawn Michaels!" DIESEL "Are you kiddin' me?" Diesel had walked over and pulled Vince's arm over, effectively taking the microphone for himself. DIESEL "This has to be a joke, right?" Honky Tonk Man's face showed he was clearly offended while Shawn Michaels threw his hands up in disbelief, asking Diesel what he was talking about. DIESEL "I thought you were putting together a serious team, here. What the hell is this? We're showin' up to Survivor Series dressed up like Elvis?" Diesel walked away as Harvey Wippleman tried to calm him down. Michaels was steaming and could be heard shouting about respect. SHAWN MICHAELS "Okay, let's settle down here! I can assure you, The Honky Tonk Man held the Intercontinental Title for 465 days - longer than anyone else ever has. Put some respect on his name!" Diesel wasn't interested in the "facts" as he shrugged his shoulders and exited the ring, stepping over the top rope and heading up the aisle toward the back. Before leaving, he pointed to Harvey Wippleman. SHAWN MICHAELS “You better get your man in line! Remember Diesel - we have a deal! You want that money and a shot at this gold belt, you'll play ball with the Heart Break Kid!" HARVEY WIPPLEMAN "Don't you worry Mr. HBK - Diesel will be there and he won't let you down!" SHAWN MICHAELS "You better!" Wippleman nodded in agreement before scurrying out of the ring to chase Diesel to the back. |
Perhaps some trouble in paradise for The Heartbreakers as Diesel seemed less than thrilled throughout the promo, but be that as it may, Shawn Michaels had seemingly completed his team for Survivor Series.
The question remained about who would fill out the rest of the Macho Man's All-Stars however. On the October 30th episode of WWF Superstars, Randy Savage would deliver that reveal as we would soon know one more member of his team. On the November 1st episode of Raw, not only would Savage reveal the final member of his team, but that person will be in action...against THE HONKY TONK MAN!
MEN ON A MISSION.
When the now former WWF Tag Team Champions, Money Inc. (represented by Ted DiBiase and Mr. Hughes, since I.R.S. had gone down with an injury) lost in an upset to The Smoking Gunns - Ted DiBiase decided to put a bounty out on the new champions. While several teams tried and failed to collect, word made it out to a trio of bounty hunters from Chicago and their manager Oscar - collectively Men on a Mission Bountyhunters. With their business needing a spark, the chance to collect on WWF's Most Wanted would mean the big money.
Men on a Mission would debut at WWF Stars & Stripes Challenge by attacking Bart and Billy Gunn when they were scheduled to have a rematch with Money Inc. The attack seemed to indicate they had collected the bounty, but The Smoking Gunns would return to lasso the briefcase away from Mr. Hughes, stopping the payout. At Summerslam, The Smoking Gunns won the battle, defeating Men on a Mission.
TED DIBIASE.
Meanwhile, "The Million Dollar Man" would soon grow tired of Money Inc. entirely, fired Mr. Hughes and declared his intentions to shift towards building a new Million Dollar Corporation and wanted to identify a top talent to build his "Million Dollar Brand" around. Ted had been impressed with Men on a Mission's MABEL, but after Mabel shocked everyone by turning down the offer - DiBiase rescinded the offer and promised to find someone better to offer out.
And on the October 18th episode of Raw, we would find out just who Ted DiBiase intended to build his Corporation around.
MABEL (w/Oscar & Mo) vs. DENNIS DIAMOND Closing out Raw tonight, Mabel completely dominated Dennis in a one-sided affair, able to showcase his strength and power by manhandling the enhancement talent while also showing off some surprising agility with a spinning heel kick before finally putting this one away with ease, finishing the jobber off with a splash from the second turnbuckle for the academic three count. Winner - Mabel by pinfall at 1:57 Post-match, Oscar and Mo entered the ring to celebrate with their partner, raising his arm in victory. But before Raw could come to an end...the camera cut away. "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!" The sound of the Million Dollar Man's laughter through the speakers signaled Ted DiBiase gracing us with his presence to close out Raw. DiBiase walked out onto the stage with a microphone. DiBiase stops at the top of the aisleway TED DIBIASE “Very, very impressive, Mabel! That poor, pathetic, little geek never stood a chance! Hahahahaha!" In the ring, Mabel sneered in DiBiase's direction while Mo and Oscar looked confused, Oscar throwing his arms up and wanting to know what DiBiase's problem was. TED DIBIASE "Squashing little bugs like him is one thing, but what about when you're in there with someone...YOUR OWN SIZE?" Mabel held up his arms, telling DiBiase to "bring it on." TED DIBIASE "Oh, I'm not talking about me...I'm DEFINITELY not your size. But I do know a thing or two about leading GIANTS in this industry. That's why I came to you for my new Million Dollar Brand...my Million Dollar Corporation. The Million Dollar Corporation needs to be fronted by someone truly LARGER THAN LIFE...someone who can be AT THE TOP OF THE WWF...with the WORLD TITLE around their waist. And at first...I thought you had it in you, Mabel. But then I realized, those two clowns in the ring with you would just hold you back." Another sneer from Mabel while Oscar and Mo were also getting visibly angry at the insults being tossed their way. TED DIBIASE "But I wanted to let you be the first to meet the first member of my Corporation. The man who is truly larger than life. I've struck a deal of the lifetime because somebody was willing to sell me this contract. My first client in my million dollar stable is none other than...a former WWF CHAMPION...he is...YOKOZUNA!" Vince and Heenan couldn't believe it as out from the back walked the massive Japanese Superstar...and yes, former WWF Champion for the few seconds that he was indeed, Yokozuna! No Mr. Fuji to be seen as Vince connected the dots that Ted DiBiase had purchased the contract from Mr. Fuji to bring Yokozuna over to the Million Dollar Corporation! TED DIBIASE "THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING! With my leadership - Yokozuna is going right back to the top of the WWF - and Mabel, you're gonna be crushed underneath him on the way to the top! HAHAHAHA! And anyone else who wants to ride the wave to success, the Million Dollar Corporation is accepting applications...and after all...EVERYBODY'S GOT A PRICE!" "HAHAHAHA!" DiBiase's laughter brought Raw to an end as he lifted up Yokozuna's arm in victory while the rest of Men on a Mission stared the duo down. |
YOKOZUNA
At WrestleMania, Yokozuna defeated Bret Hart to become the WWF Champion, although that reign lasted all of a few minutes when Mr. Fuji allowed an open challenge and Hulk Hogan would immediately beat Yokozuna thanks to some botched pocket salt. Yokozuna would go on to be unsuccessful in a rematch with Hogan at King of the Ring before suffering another loss to Lex Luger in Luger's debut match at SummerSlam.
With two, perhaps three, high profile losses at PPV in a row - the question became where does the larger than life superstar go from here? "The Million Dollar Man" saw Yokozuna as a superstar but clearly needed better management. Under his brand, perhaps Yokozuna could finally get over that hump to truly win..and keep..the WWF Championship.
In an interview on WWF Superstars, Mr. Fuji would confirm that he had accepted money from Ted DiBiase to sell Yokozuna's contract - and now Mr. Fuji was planning to enjoy his retirement.
It would also be confirmed on WWF Superstars that Survivor Series would feature a battle of two titans as Yokozuna would do battle with Mabel in a clash of over 1,000 pounds of wrestler!
CARNEVIL.
Ringling Brothers, eat your heart out because there's a new circus in town. This "freakshow" esque carnival act is led by Doink the Clown, who has been involved in a nearly year long battle with Crush that dates back to the Royal Rumble. Since stealing a fluke win over Crush at WrestleMania, Doink has added the services of The Ringmaster (Scott Levy/Raven) and Adam Bomb (a man impervious to pain due to surviving the Three Mile Island incident).
CarnEvil have seemed to have the upperhand on Crush every step of the way, even getting Adam Bomb to turn on Crush at SummerSlam upon his debut. Crush has found an unlikely ally in the form of TATANKA after Doink succeeded in recruiting the "one-eyed" Sherri (an injury Sherri has been selling since Crush threw her into Lex Luger's glass mirror several months ago) who just happened to be Tatanka's manager. Tatanka and Crush have agreed to head up a Survivor Series team against CarnEvil.
TYPHOON.
With CarnEvil still one member short of a Survivor Series team, Doink has begun scouting for "The Greatest Show on Earth." They've turned their attention to "THE NATURAL DISASTER" (or at least their proposed moniker for Typhoon). Typhoon has been without his Natural Disaster tag partner, Earthquake, due to injury, but Typhoon has been racking up many enhancement victories as a way to keep him strong.
The scouting of Typhoon continued on the October 16th episode of Raw when Typhoon defeated Iron Mike Sharpe with Doink and The Ringmaster watching on. A match would be set for October 25th's episode of Raw when it would be...
Crush!
TYPHOON vs. CRUSH It's not every day that Crush goes up against an opponent as large as him, much less finding himself at a size disadvantage but that was definitely the case as he found himself against the massive force known as Typhoon. But Crush wasted no time going straight at Typhoon, backing him backwards into the corner with a flurry of punches before sending him across the ring for the larger wrestler to reverse it and catch Crush off the rebound. Crush found himself in the unique position of being overpowered as Typhoon utilized his immense strength, taking control of the match until Crush was able to reverse a splash attempt from Typhoon before bouncing off the ropes and hitting a shoulder block to Typhoon that only rocked the big man. Crush bounced off the ropes again for another clothesline - getting the big man teetering some more, before a THIRD clothesline finally took the big man off his feet! However, just as Crush was getting the momentum - Doink the Clown walked out from the back and began watching the match. At first, it appeared Doink was simply observing with a vested interest with one man being his rival and the other a potential recruit. Crush tried to focus on the match at hand, but when he attempted to set up Typhoon for a Piledriver, Doink would get more involved by hopping onto the apron!Crush walked away from Typhoon, pointing to Doink threateningly and telling the referee to warn the clown. With the referee handling things, Crush turned around only to realize Typhoon was back to his feet! Typhoon scooped up Crush - POWERSLAM! But Typhoon also noticed Doink and didn't seem too pleased to have the clown involved in his match. Typhoon now turned HIS back to Crush as he went over and grabbed Doink by the collar. Doink tried to plead with Typhoon, that he was there to help him...but THE RINGMASTER snuck into the ring from the crowd! As Crush staggered back to his feet - TASER TO CRUSH! An unfortunately all too familiar feeling to Crush at this point, as once again he tastes the electricity of that damn taser from The Ringmaster, who disappeared as quickly as he had entered. Doink would also leave the apron, with Typhoon turning around to see Crush laid out on the mat. Left only to assume it was from his previous powerslam, Typhoon bounced off the ropes - TIDAL WAVE splash to Crush! ONE - TWO - THREE! Winner: Typhoon by pinfall at 6:32 After the match, Doink and The Ringmaster both entered the ring and began stomping away to the fallen Crush, adding insult to injury. But it was TYPHOON pulling BOTH men off of Crush! Doink quickly confronted Typhoon, before stepping aside and offering Typhoon praise for the attack on Crush. Typhoon smiled and walked towards Crush, examining the fallen superstar...BEFORE TURNING AND LAYING OUT DOINK WITH A CLOTHESLINE! It would appear Doink had his answer - Typhoon was NOT joining CarnEvil! Ringmaster reacted by leaping up onto Typhoon's back and trying to choke him out, but Typhoon snap mared him over his shoulders and to the mat! Both CarnEvil members pulled themselves up as Typhoon bounced off the ropes - DOUBLE CLOTHESLINE!However, Typhoon could be caught with a RUNNING BIG BOOT from Adam Bomb who had entered the ring to come to the aid of his CarnEvil teammates. With Typhoon down from Adam Bomb, Doink and Ringmaster were back up to make it a 3-on-1 assault on the former "has been" teammate. Bobby Heenan suggested Typhoon was going to regret his decision as CarnEvil picked Typhoon up off the mat and began to set him up for The Wipeout. But wait - out from the back it was...EARTHQUAKE! Typhoon's longtime tag team partner who has been out with injury! He has made his valiant return complete with a huge ovation! Seeing Earthquake charging out, Doink decides to quickly roll out of the ring. The Ringmaster met him head on, only to be lifted up and tossed OVER THE TOP ROPE to ringside! It was now Earthquake going toe-to-toe with Adam Bomb - except Earthquake quickly got Bomb to the ropes and CLOTHESLINED Adam over the top as well! Bomb managed to land on his feet after going head over heels over the ropes, and immediately was restrained by Doink, instructing Adam Bomb away from the ring. While CarnEvil headed away from the ring - Earthquake helped Typhoon back to his feet. The two embraced for a big beefy man hug before they both turned and helped Crush up to his feet. Raw would come to a close with the trio standing united. |
With THE NATURAL DISASTERS reunited and back in the WWF, Crush may have found the two wrestlers to fill out the rest of his team. On WWF Superstars that week, it would be confirmed that the team now known as THE CRUSHING DISASTERS would be comprised of Crush, Tatanka, Typhoon and Earthquake against CarnEvil...who still had one opening on their team.
JERRY "THE KING" LAWLER.
While The King had been a commentator alongside Vince McMahon since 1992, Lawler began stepping into the ring after WrestleMania in a more active role. He came out on Raw to antagonize the New York fans before finally returning to in-ring competition, including defeating a suddenly crowd favorite Brooklyn Brawler in a controversial match, drawing the ire of New Yorkers everywhere in defense of his fellow heel allies.
Lawler set his sights on Razor Ramon after Ramon won the 1993 King of the Ring, declaring that there was only one "TRUE" King of Wrestling and costing Razor Ramon his rematch with Bret Hart at the WWF Championship on multiple occasions, including interfering in a number one contender’s opportunity that could’ve earned Ramon a WWF Championship shot. Lawler and Razor would feud throughout the summer, with Razor getting the decisive victory to close out that chapter.
Since SummerSlam, Jerry Lawler has aligned himself with veteran Bob Backlund, knighting and dubbing him SIR ROBERT BACKLUND. Together they have now become known as The Royal Court.
ROCK & SHOCK
Chris Candido first showed up on WWF television as part of a storyline where he was attending an event as a fan, planning to propose to his girlfriend Tammy Lynn before being interrupted by Shawn Michaels. When Marty Jannetty would make his return to the WWF, defeating HBK in an open challenge for the Intercontinental Championship, Candido was revealed as a student of Jannetty that Jannetty had been training behind the scenes.
After Jannetty had beaten Michaels, Candido added some extra embarrassment by scoring a roll-up and a “visual” three count on Michaels that would earn Candido the ire of “The Heart Break Kid,” especially after he would end up doing it again the following week.
After a brief feud with HBK and Flash Norton, Jannetty and Candido began competing in the tag division under their name Rock & Shock. Candido especially earned the ire of Sir Robert Backlund for being disrespectful and failing to show “respect to his elders,” after Candido and Jannetty had mocked Backlund’s in-ring performance at SummerSlam. Lawler would go on to help Backlund win a match against Candido, and then a distraction from Lawler (appearing at ringside during an episode of Superstars) helped The Headshrinkers steal a victory from Rock & Shock.
The October 11th episode of Raw saw Rock & Shock defeat The Brooklyn Brawler and Reno Riggins, but during the match Jerry Lawler invited Tammy Lynn to join The Royal Court, which would end up officially happening on the October 18th episode of Raw.
“THE GREAT GATES OF KIEV” The crowd was welcomed by The Royal Court with a warm round of boos as Bob Backlund walked out first before Jerry "The King" Lawler made his way out next, draped in a royal purple cape and holding his purple crown in his arms. The pair stopped at the King's Court platform at the side of the stage, soaking in the reaction. SIR ROBERT BACKLUND "YOU ARE ALL ABOUT TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF ROYALTY! Show your respect and pay your respects to the one TRUE KING of wrestling - JERRY LAWLER!" The crowd was, of course, having none of that respect business, instead chanting "BURGER KING" in the direction of Lawler, while Vince McMahon noted that Lawler could hardly be calling himself the one true King after losing to Razor Ramon not long ago.Backlund handed the microphone over to Jerry Lawler. JERRY LAWLER "Thank you Sir Robert, but these ingrates here in New York wouldn't know class if it smacked them in their ugly faces!" Both Lawler and Backlund laughed as more boos rained down. JERRY LAWLER "But I'm really excited about tonight's episode of The King's Court...not just because we get to be in this cesspool known as New York. No, it's because of what we're about to do...we are officially welcoming the newest addition to the Royal Court - TAMMY LYNN!" As she walked out from the back with no music but looking stunning, the crowd gave the 20 year old Tammy a mixed reaction. There was a visible hush, then boos, then murmurs of confusion as she made her way up to the platform. Despite Lawler's pleasant introduction, she looked uncomfortable standing there. JERRY LAWLER "My, my, my - aren't you a sight for sore eyes? Come on over, don't be shy! These people love you! Or at least they want you to be what we want you too!" Lawler's super creepy (especially in hindsight) tone drew a wave of uncomfortable laughter from the audience as Tammy stepped onto the platform beside him. JERRY LAWLER "I think I might as well start this interview off with the biggest question - what is a girl like you doing with a loser like The 1-2-3 Kid? You're wasting your time when you could actually have a shot with someone like ME! I can guarantee to you I will last longer than ONE, TWO, THREE! Hahaha!" TAMMY LYNN "I'm sorry, but you wish you were half the man that Chris is." JERRY LAWLER "Haha, little lady - you have NO IDEA how much of a man The King is. You can lie to yourself all you want...but I've watched the footage. The world has seen it!" The screen cuts to footage from the May 3, 1993 episode of Raw featuring Shawn Michaels interrupting Chris Candido and Tammy, followed by HBK attempting to charm Tammy into leaving with him. The clip plays out with Michaels lifting her hand and Tammy showing a brief, conflicted smile.Back on the King's Court set, Tammy shook her head. JERRY LAWLER "Right there! That little smile. That little glimmer in your eye! Don't tell me you wouldn't have been shackin' up with Shawn Michaels after that! You're not fooling anybody anymore...well...not in Candido's corner anyway." Now fired up, Tammy stepped forward toward Lawler. TAMMY LYNN "Look here, you disgusting piece of trash! I woulda never left Chris - because I love him! And I'd also LOVE to see him kick your ass!" JERRY LAWLER "Now, now...that's quite the ugly mouth for such a pretty girl. But I like fire! I tell ya what, I'm sensing a lot of tension here between you and the King. Maybe you should explore your options. I mean, wasn't he supposed to propose to you? Where's that ring on your finger?!" Having struck a nerve, Lawler grinned - but Tammy fired back with a slap across the face! SMACK! Lawler staggered, clutching his cheek. The crowd erupted as Marty Jannetty rushed out from the back and joined Tammy on the platform. CHRIS CANDIDO "That's enough! I knew this was a bad idea - this is ridiculous!" JERRY LAWLER "Well, well, well - nice of you to join us, Kid. And I have to thank you for that slap...it woke me up! Just look at the difference here. Over here you have Royalty. Over there you've got a couple of bums just trying to act like they belong in the WWF. You went from being a 'Kid' to a 'man'...or better yet, from a loser to a laughingstock!" TAMMY LYNN "Not in a million years, you sicko!" MARTY JANNETTY "Look, let's cut this crap, okay. You won't stay out of our business, we won't stay out of yours. Let's settle this in the ring like we're supposed to. Survivor Series - how about we put together a team and you put together a team?" JERRY LAWLER "Ehhhh - I don't know. I don't really see what I have to prove, quite honestly. What exactly? Beating the two of you means nothing." MARTY JANNETTY "For the pride of winning? For the love of the game?" JERRY LAWLER "Booooring! I want some REAL STAKES! If we're gonna do this, I want something on the line. How about this - if your team wins, I drop our issue and leave you alone. BUT if the Royal Court wins...I want just one thing. One date with Tammy Lynn." Candido immediately snapped, furious but Marty held up his arm to stop him. MARTY JANNETTY "That's ridiculous. Of course we're not agreeing to tha—" But Tammy Lynn interjected. TAMMY LYNN "It's okay, Marty. Chris, I have complete faith in you...and if this is what it takes to shut them up so you can kick their ass - then WE ACCEPT." Candido and Jannetty couldn't believe Tammy had stepped up like that. Lawler smirked as the crowd erupted. Tammy turned her back on the Royal Court and walked back to her team, Candido and Jannetty following, still trying to plead their case - but the agreement had already been sealed. |
With October coming to a close, Survivor Series was a few weeks away and the card continued to shape up with the announcement that Jerry Lawler would lead his Royal Court against the Rock & Shock’s team - and if Lawler's team won, he'd get a date with Tammy Lynn Sytch.
Here's how the updated card is looking with just one update to go before Survivor Series.
