January 1st, 867 C.E.

Coming from a minor family, Redmond Mac Niall's life began as so many other nobles and lords had in his native Ireland... with a strong Catholic upbringing and an education in manners of military and piety. Redmond would have perhaps gone on to join the priesthood, or some other organization... had it not been for the tragic passing of his father in a duel. Forced to become the leader of the family at such a young age, Redmond never forgot the words of his father, to never let his enemies rest. As it happened, the man who killed Redmond's was a local chieftain. This chieftain, of no particular note nor virtue, disliked by the populace and local lords. Redmond's father had attempted to become an usurper, but with his death, it was upon Redmond to take charge. Yet with the support of those minor lords and families, Redmond and his mother Emer usurped the lord.

At the seat of power, and having come of age at 16, young Redmond Mac Niall declared the capital of his chiefdom "Ua Bharra", after his family's name; the English had Anglicized it to Barry, which in this case, made the chief Redmond McNeal Barry.

Traits: Skilled Tactician, Attractive, Shrewd, Quick, Strong, Groomed, Knight, Duelist, Wroth, Cynical, Silver-Tongued
Spouse: Lasairfiona nic Tuathal Eoganacht-Glendamnach (Age: 16, Traits: Thrifty Clerk, Good With Numbers, Quiet, Just)

(This is a heavily modified CK2 game, with extra features. The hope is to start as a tribal chief and build up a Republican empire in Ireland. The BTB will be told in the style of a journal. Here's to hoping it goes well. Also if "Redmond Barry" sounds familiar, it's literally aped from "Barry Lyndon", the novel and 1975 Stanley Kubrick movie.)

Redmond Mac Niall
Part I: 867 CE
- January 10th, 867 CE: Oh, to come of age in the wellspring of a new year. Mother tells me that inheritance is of utmost importance, and to seek marriage at the earliest convenience. Calling upon the minor lords, the most suitable spouse would be a distant relative of King Cenn-Faelad, the high chief of Mumu, on the Southern coast of the island. I had not met her until she arrived to my camp earlier in the week. Her disposition was that of a meek-mannered woman of godly temperance; speaking with her, it became apparent that she was accustomed to manners of money and business, something which had taken me by surprise. I could not help but be charmed by her.

- January 25th, 867 CE: The day had finally come for Lasairfiona, or "Fiona" as she preferred, and I to become a union. As the words left Bishop Cainchomrac's lips, "Do you agree to take this woman as your lawfully wedded wife?", all that was left was to say the two magic words: I do. Our wedding could scarcely have gone off any smoother than thought possible. The party-goers to our reception had gifted me with a tribute of gold, this would not go to waste. I have grand plans for the capital of Ua Bharra.

I have to admit though, I found myself annoyed and agitated at Bishop Cainchomrac's drinking at the party; I have always found him to be a rather odious man, not to dispensed for mature conversation, and his humor makes me wish for a mule to kick my teeth out. Why, even some of the ladies of the court took to him, much to my bewilderment. This man was my bishop, he administered my own wedding, and now here he is with his obnoxiousness, drunken buffoonery, and terrible jokes. Fiona kept me occupied from losing my temper, with pleasant conversation about the ideals of business prospects, both in Eire and abroad. It appears that mother was right, she would be a calming presence for me indeed.

- February 19th, 867 CE: I had heard whispers of what we Celts called the "Lochlannach" (Norse), the people from the North lands, had landed a massive army in the Shasannach (Saxon) lands. I can scarcely imagine the looks on the face of those lords whence they came upon the hordes of the Lochlannach. They must have released their bowels after gazing upon those warriors. Here on Eire, we have our own problems with the Lochlannach; they raid our lands, capture our subjects, burn our churches, and cause us ruin. As much as those Shasannach disgust me, they must defeat those Northmen by any means necessary.

(The British Isles, 867 CE)
- March 1st, 867 CE: Construction begins on the grounds of a new training facility for the levies of my county. It may be some time before it is completed, but it shall go a long way towards consolidation and expansion in my future plans; not least of all defense against the Shasannach, Lochlannach, or the Breatnais (Welsh).

- August 16th, 867 CE: Bishop Cainchomrac visited me today, telling me of a dispatch from the most holy Grace himself: Pope Eugenius III. The Pope spoke with some interest in the ongoing unsettlement across the Isles, and declared a mission to all good Christians of the realm to take up arms against the heathen Lochlannach at any turn. With God's blessing, we cannot be defeated, it seems.
