According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that there has been talk in MLW about removing the weight divisions for their champions. Court Bauer is reportedly in favor of it and has been since he was a writer for WWE.

There is the question, and a debate in MLW, about whether this would work in the US. The wrestling public has been conditioned on weight classes after WCW and WWE had wrestlers in smaller weight classes appear not on the level of the bigger stars. The goal is to make the titles mean more, although they might have to wait until they get a TV deal to do that. The idea is to make the audience see that weight classes don’t matter over time.

Dave Meltzer noted that the audience these days doesn’t see weight classes as important due to smaller wrestlers overall and a less pronounced size difference than in the 80s and 90s. It’s believed that they can be taught with the right talent and matches, especially with Mexican wrestlers, who have that as part of their product.

I mean, weight classes are kind of irrelevant, but at the same time I like the middleweight championship belt and hope it doesn’t go away, but the rest of the belts don’t need weight classes.

Before we worry about weight classes, though, can we just get the television show back on the air every week.

I feel if you do this, then the middleweight title needs a gimmick or something otherwise will feel a bit pointless with the openweight title too

Weight classes don't mean anything and it'll be interesting seeing what Court does in regards to changing an established system.

Wasn't the point of emphasising the weight classes to make it a real sports feel? Feels like an example of sanding MLW down to make it the same as everyone else

All you really need to do is promote it like TNA promotes the x-division title. Make it your exhibition title.

It's just that so much of MLW seems to be intended to feel like real sport. Calling matches "fights" is part of that, the weight class is another. It'd be a shame to see that go
Yeah, always liked that. They called the superstars fighters and the matches with championships are title fights, etc.

All you really need to do is promote it like TNA promotes the x-division title. Make it your exhibition title.
Tbf doing things more like current TNA sounds less appealing to sound reconsidering checking it out now Riddle is not champion :side:
